NEW DELHI: The Kansas City Royals have secured their future by signing shortstop sensation Bobby Witt Jr. to the largest contract in franchise history. At just 23 years old and entering his third MLB season, Witt has already proven himself as a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the diamond. In 158 games last year, he showcased his offensive prowess, boasting a slash line of .276/.319/.495, accompanied by 30 home runs, 96 RBI, and an impressive 49 stolen bases. Witt led the American League with 11 triples, displaying a combination of power and speed that sets him apart.

Witt's trajectory has been remarkable, with significant improvements in his defensive skills in his sophomore MLB campaign. Notably, he reduced his strikeout rate from 21.4% as a rookie to 17.4% in 2023, earning him a place in MLB's 79th percentile. The young star accumulated 4.4 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) in 2023, further emphasizing his all-around contributions.

The historic contract includes opt-out clauses for Witt in years seven through 10, providing flexibility for potential changes in his career trajectory. Additionally, the Royals hold an option to extend the contract by three years and $89 million after the 11th season, potentially bringing the total value to an astounding $377.8 million over 14 years.

The Royals' decision to invest significantly in Witt comes amid efforts to reshape the team's fortunes following a challenging 56-106 campaign. The franchise aims to revitalize its performance and appeal to fans, especially as Jackson County voters contemplate a referendum on a sales tax increase to fund a new downtown stadium.

Witt's journey with the Royals began when he was selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2019 draft straight out of high school. After three productive years in the minor leagues, including being honored as Minor League Player of the Year in 2021, Witt made a significant impact in his rookie season in 2022. His swift rise continued in 2023, securing a seventh-place finish in the MVP voting.
