NEW DELHI: Carly Thibault-DuDonis, at 32 years old, is making significant strides in her second year as head coach, steering the Fairfield women's basketball team to a remarkable 22-1 record and a 20-game winning streak. The Stags, on the verge of entering the AP Top 25 for the first time in program history, are garnering attention for their impressive performance under Thibault-DuDonis' leadership.

Raised in a basketball-centric family, Carly Thibault-DuDonis is the daughter of former NBA and WNBA coach Mike Thibault. Her early exposure to the game, coupled with a natural curiosity, led her to become a student of the sport from a young age. Thibault-DuDonis recalls spending late nights with her father, breaking down game film and absorbing basketball knowledge.

Mike Thibault, now a former NBA and WNBA coach, emphasized that he never pushed his children into basketball but acknowledged their intrinsic interest in the game. Thibault-DuDonis, inspired by her father's coaching career and her exposure to female basketball players, found a passion for the sport that would shape her future.

Her journey in basketball includes experiences as a ball girl on her father's team, forming connections with players who later became coaches and mentors. Thibault-DuDonis served in coaching roles at various institutions, including Florida State, Eastern Michigan, and Mississippi State, where she contributed to back-to-back championship game appearances.

Her pivotal role as the top assistant to Lindsay Whalen at Minnesota played a crucial part in shaping her coaching philosophy. Thibault-DuDonis emphasizes a people-oriented approach, focusing on building connections and fostering chemistry within the team.

Thibault-DuDonis took over as head coach at Fairfield in 2022, succeeding long-time coach Joe Frager. Despite being a surprise hire, she quickly gained the trust of the team by sharing her vision, addressing areas for improvement, and demonstrating genuine care for the players.

Senior guard Janelle "Nellie" Brown highlighted Thibault-DuDonis's relatability, emphasizing her understanding of the challenges faced by the current generation of players. Thibault-DuDonis's recruiting efforts have also paid off, with players like freshman Meghan Anderson making significant contributions to the team.

Fairfield, based in Connecticut, faces the formidable presence of UConn, an 11-time national champion. However, Thibault-DuDonis's coaching prowess has earned recognition, even from UConn's head coach Geno Auriemma, who commended the Stags for their impressive 20-game winning streak and acknowledged the challenges of achieving such success, especially for a mid-major program.
