NEW DELHI: The Columbus Blue Jackets have parted ways with general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, marking the end of his tenure with the team. The decision comes amidst a challenging season for the Blue Jackets, who currently find themselves in last place in the Eastern Conference and on track to miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
President of hockey operations John Davidson announced the decision, citing the need for a fresh perspective and improved performance as the team moves forward. Kekalainen, a respected figure in the NHL and the third-longest tenured GM, had been with the Blue Jackets for over a decade.
Davidson, along with assistant GMs Josh Flynn and Basil McRae, will take on GM duties on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is found. The team president emphasized the importance of an exhaustive search for external candidates to bring a new vision to the organization.
The timing of Kekalainen's departure raises questions, considering the impending trade deadline on March 8. The Blue Jackets, currently in a rebuilding phase, could become sellers, with notable players like center Jack Roslovic potentially on the trade block.
The decision follows a turbulent season that saw the departure of coach Mike Babcock, whose hiring last summer ended in controversy. Babcock resigned on the eve of training camp due to conduct issues with players, adding to the challenges faced by the Blue Jackets.
Team president Mike Priest defended the ownership's involvement in the decision-making process, emphasizing transparency and the need for a change to propel the team forward. The timing, though unconventional, aims to allow the team to make crucial decisions ahead of the trade deadline and plan for the future.
Kekalainen's legacy with the Blue Jackets includes four consecutive postseason appearances under coach John Tortorella, but recent coaching changes and a lack of playoff success have contributed to the need for a new direction.
