NEW DELHI: The No. 15 Creighton Bluejays secured an 85-66 victory over the No. 1-ranked UConn Huskies on Tuesday night, ending UConn's 14-game win streak. Creighton, which had lost all six previous encounters with top-ranked teams, established a double-digit lead in the first half and maintained control throughout the game.
Creighton coach Greg McDermott acknowledged the significant win, stating, "We played a really good game and we beat an incredible team, a team that has a legitimate chance to win a national championship.
But we’re pretty good as well." The Bluejays led by 23 points with 10 minutes left, and despite UConn narrowing the gap to 10 points, Creighton held firm, securing the impressive victory.
Steven Ashworth led Creighton's scoring with 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Trey Alexander contributed 16 points, and Ryan Kalkbrenner added 15. The Bluejays showcased their shooting prowess, making 14 of 28 3-pointers, marking their second-best shooting night from beyond the arc this season.
UConn, coming off a significant win against then-No. 4 Marquette, faced challenges in Omaha, playing their third game in seven days. Tristen Newton scored 27 points, with 17 coming in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome Creighton's dominant performance.
The Bluejays capitalized on their home-court advantage, buoyed by a rowdy sellout crowd. Creighton's offensive flow, coupled with a challenging schedule for UConn, contributed to the surprising outcome. UConn coach Danny Hurley noted, "We’ve had a great run, but it just kind of felt like today we ran into them playing great and us not playing as well as we need to here in Omaha. We were definitely stunned."
