Paedophile coach dies weeks after found guilty of raping and sexually abusing six female students
NEW DELHI: Australian sports, particularly swimming, has a rich history of producing world-class athletes and coaches. One such figure was Dick Caine, who passed away at the age of 78 on Wednesday.
Caine was a renowned Olympic swim coach who dedicated over four decades to training and nurturing young talent.
While his contributions to the sport were significant, it is essential to acknowledge the grave allegations of sexual misconduct that tarnished his legacy.
Arrested in 2022, Caine was charged with 39 offences involving the sexual abuse and rape of six female students during the 1970s and 1980s and was eventually found guilty in August earlier this year.
The victims, who were teenagers at the time, endured these traumatic experiences at the Carss Park swimming pool in Sydney, as well as in Caine's home and car.
Caine's actions were particularly heinous, as one of his victims was only 10 years old when the abuse occurred.
Despite the severity of the charges, Caine did not attend a single day of the hearing due to his deteriorating health condition, as he was battling terminal lung and throat cancer.
While Caine's death on Wednesday morning, weeks after his conviction, may have prevented the victims from delivering their victim impact statements at the scheduled special hearing in December, it does not diminish the gravity of his actions or the trauma endured by the survivors.
"The whole thing is just a tragedy that it took so long to get to this point of the legal process, that he's now passed," said child protection activist Hetty Johnston now that the special hearing in December will no longer proceed.
