NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day.


Known as 'The Wizard,' Dhyan Chand represented the Indian hockey team from 1925 to 1949 and scored over 1500 goals in 185 matches, leading India to three Olympic Gold Medal victories in 1928, 1932, and 1936. Dhyan Chand received the Padma Bhushan in 1956, and his birth anniversary is celebrated as National Sports Day.


Every year, India commemorates National Sports Day to honor sports icons who have contributed to the country's success on the international stage. This day serves as a recognition of their achievements and dedication.
