Haryana government

appointed international woman wrestler Geeta Phogat as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (

DSP

) in Haryana Police.

A proposal of the home department was approved at a meeting of the state cabinet on Tuesday presided over by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

An official spokesman said that Phogat is a graduate and a sportsperson of international repute. She is also a gold medallist of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The State Cabinet also approved the proposal of the Home Department to appoint mountaineer

Ram Lal

as Sub Inspector in Haryana Police Department against sports quota.

It is a most welcome initiative by a State Govt. other than the cricket, sports in India are given little support by the State or philanthropists. Most sports suffer due to lack of funding &recognition. Absence of training facilities in rural areas inhibits growth of talent in villages. There is strong case of large funding of facilities instead of announcing BIF awards on a few olympian medallists.
