Multiple victims stabbed at Penn Station became the latest alarming headline in New York City on Sunday night after a violent attack injured at least five people inside one of the nation's busiest transit hubs. The incident unfolded less than 24 hours before Madison Square Garden is expected to host one of the most high-profile NBA Finals games in decades, with President Donald Trump planning to attend as the New York Knicks return home for Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs.

Thousands of fans are expected to flood Midtown Manhattan for Monday night's matchup, while security officials are already preparing for an unprecedented operation around Madison Square Garden. Sunday's stabbing spree has now added another layer of concern as authorities continue investigating what happened inside Penn Station.

What happened at Penn Station before Knicks Finals game?

According to reports, the attack began shortly after 7 p.m. near the Amtrak terminal inside Penn Station. Authorities said an unidentified suspect, described as emotionally disturbed, allegedly stabbed multiple people before being subdued by Amtrak police officers.

Five victims were hospitalized. One reportedly suffered serious injuries, two sustained moderate injuries, and two others were treated for minor wounds. Witnesses described scenes of panic as commuters rushed away from the area.


Freelance film critic Brandon Norwood posted on social media: "This guy just stabbed somebody in Penn Station. People were flooding out of the station."

The suspect was quickly taken into custody after officers tackled him near Tracks 5 and 6. Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal later thanked emergency responders while stressing the importance of maintaining safety at a transportation hub that serves hundreds of thousands of travelers daily.


New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin also expressed concern, saying she was "deeply disturbed" by the attack and grateful to first responders who secured the scene.

Investigators have not released additional details about a possible motive, and authorities continue to ask the public to avoid the area while the investigation remains active.

Donald Trump set for Knicks Game 3 against Spurs

The stabbing occurred just one day before Trump is expected to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks confirmed over the weekend that enhanced security measures would already be in place because of the president's attendance. Fans have been instructed to arrive at least two hours early and should expect TSA-style security screenings before entering the arena.

A strict no-bag policy will also be enforced. Arena officials warned that prohibited items will not be stored at the venue, meaning fans carrying bags could be denied entry.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged the additional precautions, noting that fans understand the significance of having a sitting U.S. president attend such a major sporting event.

Law enforcement sources have indicated that hundreds of Secret Service personnel and thousands of NYPD officers will be deployed around Madison Square Garden as part of a heightened security plan.

The uncertainty stems from the chaotic scenes that followed New York's Game 2 victory in San Antonio. Roughly 6,500 fans gathered outside the arena, leading to multiple arrests after some individuals climbed structures, blocked traffic, and ignored police orders.

With Trump expected to attend Monday's game, the NYPD and Secret Service have reportedly been evaluating whether another outdoor watch party can safely take place. As of Sunday night, officials had not announced a final decision.
