Dallas Mavericks vs Atlanta Hawks: Best performers, key takeaways and more

The Dallas Mavericks took on and defeated the Atlanta Hawks in a closely contested game tonight. Even till the end of the fourth quarter, it was a single-digit game with just six points separating the teams with two minutes on the clock. In the end, a superb performance by Kyrie Irving was enough to get the Mavericks over the Hawks.

Following this win, the Mavericks are now in the ninth spot in the Western Conference with a record of 10-8. The Hawks, on the other hand, aren’t doing too well, as they have dropped to the 11th spot and have a losing record of 7-11.

Dallas Mavericks vs Atlanta Hawks: Best performers

A single glance at the stat sheet will tell you that the Dallas Mavericks outperformed Atlanta as a team and not due to individual brilliance. Kyrie was the highest scorer for the Mavs and poured in 32 points of his own. But he had plenty of help as Spencer Dinwiddie, Jaden Hardy, and Naji Marshall all had 20+ points in the absence of Luka Doncic.

The Hawks struggled tonight, and Jalen Johnson ended up being the only player to score 20+ points. However, Trae Young came close with 18 points and even dropped a mind-blowing 16 assists, making him the Hawks’ best player tonight. Atlanta came close, but there’s a lot that they need to improve on. Let’s take a look.

Dallas Mavericks vs Atlanta Hawks: Key takeaways

One thing that the Atlanta Hawks will need to take a close look at after this game is their three-point percentage. During their match against the Mavs, Atlanta only managed to hit 29% of their three-pointers. They need to do a better job at creating shots outside the perimeter, or tonight’s result will continue to repeat itself. After a 9/31 night from deep, some big adjustments feel like the need of the hour.

The Mavericks might’ve won but played far from an ideal game against the Hawks. One thing that was particularly off about the Mavs’ game was how weak they were in the paint. Even though they grabbed more rebounds than the Hawks, Dallas looked weak while driving to the basket.

At times it seemed like they were getting bullied by Atlanta’s forwards. Because of this problem, Dallas also struggled to create anything meaningful in transition. This is an issue that the Mavs will need to fix if they have any hopes of winning a championship this season. It’ll be interesting to see how these teams readjust themselves after this hard-fought game.
