The Miami Heat’s uneven start to the season has placed a bright spotlight on its core players. As the Heat sit at 20-19 and hovering around the middle of the Eastern Conference, questions continue to surface about where the team stands and who should carry it forward. Some young contributors have delivered steady production, yet the expectations are higher for the franchise pillars who define Miami’s identity.
That focus has landed squarely on Bam Adebayo, the longest-tenured player on the roster and a central figure in the Heat’s plans. His recent performances have drawn reactions across the league, including a blunt assessment from a former Timberwolves guard that quickly turned heads and sparked debate. Adebayo, who is dating Las Vegas Aces center A'ja Wilson, has yet to find his footing this season.
Ex-Timberwolves star questions Bam Adebayo’s star status
Former All-Star and longtime NBA guard Jeff Teague did not hold back while discussing Adebayo’s role during a recent appearance on Club 520. Teague addressed the growing conversation around Miami’s ceiling and framed Adebayo as a player whose impact falls short of the league’s elite tier.
“Bam don’t really be killing. He’s just a good player. He’s not a star. He’s a good complimentary piece. He’s still a quality player, fringe All Star. I think if they get Ja Morant some new blood in there that can run P&Rs with him I think he’ll step up. I just don’t think he’s playing with a pure PG right now,” Teague said on Club 520.
He commented during a stretch when Adebayo’s numbers had dipped by his own standards. He is averaging 16.4 points per game, his lowest mark since the 2019-20 season. His efficiency has also declined, with shooting splits of 44.6 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from three. Against Oklahoma City, the struggles were evident again as he scored six points in a 124-112 loss.
A'ja Wilson’s Miami Heat boyfriend under scrutiny amid team slump
Adebayo’s season has unfolded as Miami continues to search for stability. Injuries and lineup changes have limited continuity, a point Adebayo addressed publicly while explaining the team’s ongoing adjustments.
“This is like the third game we’ve been fully healthy for the whole season, so it’s going to take some time. Guys have been in and out of lineups, plug and play, we’re trying to figure it out. So hopefully we can stay healthy and get through this bump and get back to winning some games.”
The Heat followed those remarks with another loss, extending a three-game skid that included defeats to Minnesota, Indiana, and Oklahoma City. While Tyler Herro’s return offered optimism, Miami has yet to regain their strenght.
