Giannis Antetokounmpo recently had one of his best summers ever and led Greece to bronze at the EuroBasket. After the victory, the icon talked candidly about taking home the medal. He also shared some images that his brother, Kostas Antetokounmpo, another Greek icon, had posted on his Instagram. The medals were worn by the three Antetokounmpo brothers in their locker room in the photos. However, after the league, the Antetokounmpo family received bad news.
Antetokounmpo brothers savor EuroBasket bronze while Kostas’ NBA return remains doubtful
The Antetokounmpo brothers, including Giannis and
Thanasis as well as Kostas and Alex, are the most well-known clan in basketball. Now, their fans really want Giannis and Kostas sharing an NBA court again. However, one reporter might have put an end to this wish. It's possible that Kostas Antetokounmpo won't make a comeback to the NBA.
Reporter John Karalis recently discussed the same in response to a reader's query on Kostas Antetokounmpo. He said:
“I don’t think that he is going to be an NBA center prospect. Number one reason why, he’s about to turn 28. So he’s not a prospect. He’s fully formed at this point, and he hasn’t been in the league since 2021. So, he’s a fully formed basketball player. There’s not a ton of improvement left for him to make.”
Karalis clarified that “he’s probably going to play out his career in Greece overseas, and I think that’s going to be it.”
This happened after the brothers won the bronze medal for Greece in the
EuroBasket. Giannis and his squad won after a hard-fought game between Greece and Finland. The Milwaukee Bucks' superstar opened up about the victory and stated:
“We did it. This is probably one of the biggest accomplishments that I’ve ever accomplished as an athlete.. I know I’ve won an NBA championship, but there’s no feeling like representing your national team and representing 12 million people that breathe and live this national team. This is probably the greatest accomplishment so far in my life.”
Then, referring to a prior statement made by head coach Vassilis Spanoulis during the post-game press conference, he went on:
“I am very happy for the team. I am very happy for the nation. After 16 years, as the coach said, we were able to bring success to the team..”
Giannis Antetokounmpo calls EuroBasket bronze Greece’s greatest achievement in 16 years
In what he describes as his "great achievement," Giannis Antetokounmpo eventually assisted Greece in ending their 16-year drought. After
Greece's 92-89 victory over Finland to secure third place, he stated:
"We did it, this is probably the greatest accomplishment I have ever accomplished as an athlete.”
On the other hand, according to Donatas Urbonas of BasketNews, Antetokounmpo was certain that winning a medal for Greece this summer was more significant than any of his
NBA accomplishments. As per Urbonas, the NBA star said:
"I felt for a day and a half like my legacy was on the line. And I love that feeling, because I’ve always found a way to respond.”
Antetokounmpo further said:
"When my parents did not have money, I found a way to help them sell stuff on the street. When my parents were sick, I took the bag and went by myself," Antetokounmpo added. "When I went to the States, I found a way to bring my brothers and my parents. After that, I gave my brothers a better education."
Greece and Antetokounmpo finished 9th in the 2014 FIBA
Basketball World Cup and 11th in the 2019 tournament. In 2023, he did not participate in the FIBA World Cup. Now, they have won the bronze, ending their losing streak.
