"I don’t anticipate...": Steph Curry’s limited minutes explained as Steve Kerr discusses potential end to restriction in Celtics game

After a short absence due to a left peroneal strain, Stephen Curry returned to the court with a stellar performance in the Warriors' recent game against the Washington Wizards. Despite only playing limited minutes, Curry scored an impressive 24 points, energizing the Warriors and leading them to a much-needed win. Head coach Steve Kerr, aware of the risks associated with Curry's health, carefully managed his playtime. For Dub Nation, this brief glimpse of the “Baby-Faced Assassin” was a welcome sight, even as fans hope to see him fully unleashed soon. For now, Curry is placing a premium on maintaining his health to avoid the costly mistakes that previously aggravated his ankle injury.

Why didn't Steph Curry start the second half?

Reflecting on his condition during a postgame press conference, Curry shared insight into his current health status, noting, “I feel good. It’s just still early in the year, and you’re trying to build up the endurance. Ankle feels fine. It’s just you don’t wanna get in a position where you get fatigued and put yourself in jeopardy.” His caution stems from an incident during a recent game against the Clippers, where a quick directional change led to a painful ankle tweak. Curry admitted that his decision to return to the court after the initial twist was a misstep, commenting, “I made a misjudgement on that one coz it was right away. The adrenaline got the best of me.” The initial injury, he conceded, set the stage for a re-aggravation later in the game, ultimately sidelining him for three matches.

For Curry, tonight's game held significant value beyond the scoreboard. His measured return, in his words, marked a pivotal “stepping stone” in his comeback journey. “That’s why it was important to get through this game where I could play aggressively but knew I wasn’t stretching to too many minutes,” he explained. Kerr, who is carefully monitoring his star player’s progress, hinted at the possibility of lifting Curry's minutes restriction in the upcoming game against the Boston Celtics, depending on how Curry’s body responds. "Probably depends on how he comes out tomorrow,” Kerr remarked, emphasizing that his decision will be based on Curry’s postgame recovery. “Assuming he feels good tomorrow, I don’t anticipate a big minutes restriction or anything like that for Boston,” he said.

In his limited time on the floor, Curry showcased glimpses of his former self, hitting 44.4% from beyond the arc and marking his highest-scoring game this season despite averaging just 18.3 points leading into the match. With the Boston Celtics next in line—a team that has already claimed seven victories in their first eight games—the Warriors will be counting on Curry to sustain this momentum. If his performance against the Wizards is any indication, Curry appears ready to carry this confidence into Boston, where the team hopes he’ll step up to his usual minutes and rhythm.
