“It felt kinda dark”: Cardi B shares surprising reaction to Donald Trump’s presence during Knicks and Spurs NBA Finals game
Cardi B believes President Donald Trump’s visit to Madison Square Garden changed the mood inside the arena during Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals. The rapper, who performed at halftime before the game between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on June 8, shared her thoughts during an Instagram Live session on June 9. While speaking with fans, Cardi B said Trump’s presence made the atmosphere feel different and more serious than usual.
Responding to a fan who suggested Trump’s attendance brought bad luck to the Knicks, Cardi B said, “It probably was. You can’t stop the president from going to a game, but it did feel a little dark in there. It’s OK.”
She went on to explain what she meant and compared the feeling in the building to having a school principal watching everyone. “It felt kinda dark. You know how it felt like in there? It felt like the principal was there and everybody had to be on their best behavior.” According to Billboard, the White House was contacted for comment following Cardi B’s remarks.
Trump’s appearance at Madison Square Garden brought tighter security around the venue. Several streets near the arena were closed, and fans experienced extra security checks before entering the building.
Cardi B said she understood why those measures were necessary. She also revealed that she saw Secret Service agents up close for the first time while arriving at the arena.
“You know how you always wonder how they look? Yeah, I saw them in person,” she said. “They were in front of my car. They were making us do mad circles. I wasn’t even gonna complain because I kinda get it.”
Before the game, Cardi B energized the crowd with a three-minute halftime performance. Joined by the Knicks City Dancers, she performed “Bodega Baddie” and her hit song “Bodak Yellow.”
After leaving the stage, she watched the game courtside with her son Wave, whom she shares with estranged husband Offset. Posting on Instagram Stories, she joked about sitting near the Spurs bench and said, “They got me right next to the opps! But I’mma be nice, ’cause I know this is a lot for them.”
The night ended with disappointment for New York as the Spurs secured a 115-111 victory. Even so, Cardi B remained hopeful about the Knicks’ chances in the series. She told fans she planned to return to Instagram Live before Game 4 on June 10 and hold a prayer circle with fellow Knicks supporters.
