The Golden State Warriors coach, Steve Kerr, broke his silence on the ICE shooting in Minneapolis. Rene Good, a 37-year-old woman, was fatally shot in her car by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in Minneapolis, approximately 3 miles from the Target Center. Kerr gave his statement before the team’s game against the Sacramento Kings.
Kerr was not the first one to break his silence on the issue. The Minnesota Timberwolves, on Thursday night, held a moment of silence for the victim. The act was widely appreciated across the league. Even Kerr talked about it during his statement. The Warriors coach tagged the entire incident as a “shameful” one.
He continued to give his opinion on the incident next, “It's shameful, really, in our country that we can have law enforcement officers who commit murder and seemingly get away with it. Its shameful that the government can come out and lie about what happened when there is video and witnesses who have all come out and disputed what the government is saying.” Kerr further continued, “Very demoralizing, devastating to lose anyone’s life, especially in that manner.” The Warriors’ coach extended his sympathies towards the victim’s family, “It was terribly sad for her family, for her and the city. I am glad that the Timberwolves came out and expressed their sadness.”
The incident is indeed a tragic one. Teams within the NBA are expressing their condolences for the victim and her family. This shows the kind of responsibility that athletes within the league carry towards their communities.
