LeBron James drops subtle remark on Jaylen Brown while hinting at past Bronny controversy

LeBron James has a personal grudge against the Boston Celtics that dates back to his Eastern Conference days, much like he does with the Los Angeles Lakers. During one of Bronny's first Summer League games in 2024, Brown was sitting courtside with Kysre Gondrezick and Angel Reese. The NBA's all-time top scorer hasn't forgotten what Brown said.

He merely reminded everyone that, particularly when it comes to family, he keeps receipts. When asked about his friendship with fellow All-Star Jaylen Brown following the Boston Celtics' crushing victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, James didn't mince words.

Except for "the s*** he said about Bronny at Summer League," LBJ claimed that their relationship has been "respectful." Following the Lakers' 111-89 loss to the Celtics, James credited Brown with elevating his game.

He noted:

“I think he’s just used the motivation of a lot of people saying that they’re gonna have a down year because of obviously [Jayson Tatum] being out, them losing Jrue (Holiday), Al (Horford), (Kristaps) Portzingis, their whole championship team pretty much has kind of revamped. He used it at motivation to keep them afloat. They’re playing great basketball and it’s because of him and the rest of those guys. He’s taken that next step.”

One reporter asked:

“What’s your relationship been like with him over the years.”

LeBron said, before throwing a quick jab at Brown as well:

“Our relationship has been pretty respectful, besides the sh*t he said about Bronny in Summer League… but other than that, we’ve been alright.. But other than that, we’ve been alright.. I think he went on social media and said something about it. It’s all good.”





As seen on camera at the 2024 Summer League, Brown seems to say to Kysre Gondrezick and Angel Reese, "I don't think Bronny is a pro." The video went viral online and generated controversy everywhere.

Following the virality of his remarks regarding Bronny, Brown promptly provided clarification on X:

“It’s a flex to have your son alongside you in the NBA… Bronny has all the tools around him to be successful. I look forward to watching his growth.”

In this case, Bron's analysis and endorsement of Jaylen Brown's little-known MVP campaign were unaffected by Brown's prior remarks.

But James also pointed out that despite Brown's remarks regarding his kid Bronny James while he was sitting courtside at a Summer League game in 2024, the two maintain a strong relationship.

He maintained his composure and stated that Brown should be considered for this season's MVP.

“This whole MVP thing I don’t understand what his name is not being talked about as well. Nobody gave them a shot to start the season and he’s averaging just under 30? It’s a popularity contest… I don’t know the criteria for MVP anymore and I stopped giving a damn about it a long time ago. I have my own personal issues with it.”

Since then, Brown has recanted his Summer League assessment and openly backed Bronny, claiming the rookie guard has all the resources he needs to be successful. Additionally, based on LeBron's tone, it doesn't seem like this is destroying the league.

Even though he eventually retracted his statements on social media and clarified that Bronny had "all the tools" to succeed in the NBA, those words caused a stir at the time, and it appears LeBron hasn't forgotten.
