LeBron James makes history as Lakers make unprecedented comeback victory
NEW DELHI: LeBron James has achieved nearly everything there is to achieve in the NBA. On Wednesday night, however, he etched a new chapter in his storied career by orchestrating a historic comeback against the Los Angeles Clippers, erasing a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to secure a 116–112 victory.
The 97th—and final—regular-season matchup between the co-tenants of the Crypto.com Arena showcased LeBron James at his absolute best. The stat line of 34 points, six rebounds, and eight assists only partially captures the brilliance of his performance. James shot an impressive 61.9% from the field and 58.3% from three-point range, leading the Lakers to a triumph that defied all odds.
The Clippers, who had been 31–1 this season when leading entering the fourth quarter, were left in awe as James scored 19 points in the final 12 minutes. The Lakers' win reaffirmed James's mantra: "The game is not over until it’s double zeros."
The 116–112 victory may not have immediately altered the playoff landscape for the Lakers, who might still have to navigate a play-in tournament. Nevertheless, it showcased the indomitable spirit of LeBron James, who, just months shy of his 40th birthday, demonstrated that he remains the best player on the floor when he dials up his performance.
Describing James's performance as "Sicko mode," Lakers' Anthony Davis acknowledged the awe-inspiring spectacle witnessed on the court. James's offensive onslaught in the final quarter was a testament to his unparalleled skill and determination. He knocked down five three-pointers, effortlessly maneuvering through Clippers' defense.
Reflecting on his extraordinary performance, James said, “It's just a zone, and you can't really describe it. You wish you could stay in it forever, but obviously it checks out once the game ends. But during it, you don't feel anything. It's just like a superpower feel.”
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue, who witnessed James's superpower firsthand in 2016, acknowledged the unforeseen turnaround. Lue cautioned against turning the ball over to the Lakers, but seven turnovers in the fourth quarter fueled James's offensive surge.
