The Los Angeles Lakers General Manager
Rob Pelinka has recently shared how the team acquired former Charlotte Hornets center
Mark Williams to add depth to the roster alongside
Luka Doncic. The arrival of Doncic and Williams to the Lakers has been the talk of the town as both stars are expected to fill the void following Anthony Davis’ departure in the blockbuster trade that claimed Doncic. Williams’ addition was crucial and Pelinka played well. In a recent interview with the press, the General Manager explained how the Lakers secured the deal.

Was it a big gamble to acquire
Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets at the cost of Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, and a 2030 pick swap? Not according to
Rob Pelinka. “So once Luca was on board, we've had some really good sort of basketball philosophy discussions just in terms of our roster, the players on it and just how he sees it in the spirit of just really talking about basketball at a high level. Those have been fun,” Pelinka told the press in a recent conversation.
Of course, Doncic is a “basketball savant in his own right” but there was something missing to complement the roster with a more competitive lineup hoping “if we could add a vertical big, a mobile big that fit also within JJ Redick's coaching style.”
Explaining his tactics behind securing the Williams deal in the trade, he added, "And I said, 'Hey, I'll do my best for the deadline to see if something like that's available. If not, it's something we'll attack this summer.' I think I said at my press conference a few days ago that the market for bigs was dry.”
He further compared the opportunity to the housing market, “But this opportunity came to us. Maybe it's in some sense like the L. A. housing market. Not every house is listed. And sometimes you become aware of something that's available that's not on the market. And when you see the perfect house, you're willing to go get it, even if you have to be aggressive to do it.”
Pelinka further asserted that he would never miss out the opportunity as the Willaims perfectly fits the Lakers’ profile. “I think that's how we looked at the Mark Williams opportunity when we opened up discussions with Charlotte. 23-year-old fits that profile, mobile big, one of the largest standing reaches in the NBA,” he continued. “He lined up so well just in terms of his age and career trajectory with Luka and other parts of our roster. When the opportunity came our way, we were aggressive and brought him to our team. We're super excited to add Mark Williams.”
Pelinka is not the only one to be excited about the newly welcomed stars in the roster. The Lakers' head coach
JJ Redick has also shared that the Doncic-Williams duo would be the best fit for their upcoming games. "I think Luka can play a number of ways," Redick said.

“I’m still reluctant to do that”: LeBron James refused to follow JJ Redick’s order while leading the Los Angeles Lakers to victory over the Golden State Warriors"It would be very advantageous for us to have multiple centers that can provide a vertical threat, and we feel that Mark is a young, starting center in this NBA, and he provides that vertical threat,” Redick’s comment resonated with Pelinka. Further, Redick is determined to develop Williams to make him one of the top stars in the team.
