India vs Bangladesh highlights, Champions Trophy 2025: Shubman Gill slams unbeaten ton to power India to six-wicket win over Bangladesh

India vs Bangladesh highlights, Champions Trophy 2025: A stellar century from Shubman Gill and Mohammed Shami's five-wicket haul were instrumental as India secured a six-wicket victory against Bangladesh in their ICC Champions Trophy opener at Dubai on Thursday.

In pursuit of 229 runs, established through a resilient 154-run partnership by Towhid Hridoy, India began strongly with a 69-run opening stand. Despite a mid-innings wobble at 144/4, Gill and KL Rahul guided India to victory.

The chase commenced with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill providing a solid foundation. Rohit struck three fours in Mustafizur Rahman's sixth over. India surpassed the 50-run mark by the eighth over through the captain's boundary.

The opening partnership ended at 69 when Taskin Ahmed dismissed Rohit, who scored 41 off 36 deliveries with seven fours, caught by Rishad Hossain. Virat Kohli arrived but found the spinners challenging. India reached 100 runs in 20 overs. The 42-run partnership between Kohli and Gill concluded when Rishad dismissed Kohli for 22 off 38 balls, caught by Soumya at backward point. India stood at 111/2 in 22.4 overs. Gill achieved his fourth consecutive fifty-plus score in ODIs from 69 deliveries. India subsequently lost Shreyas Iyer (15) and Axar Patel (8), leaving them at 144/4 in 30.1 overs.

KL and Gill steadily progressed towards the target.

The 200-run mark came in 42.3 overs.

Gill completed his eighth ODI century in 125 deliveries, including nine fours and two sixes. KL finished the match with a six, as India reached 231/4. Gill remained unbeaten on 101, while KL scored 41 not out.

Rishad claimed two wickets, with Taskin and Mustafizur taking one each.

Earlier, a substantial 154-run partnership between centurion Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali helped Bangladesh recover from 35/5 to post 228 runs. The remarkable recovery by Hridoy and Jaker provided Bangladesh a competitive total. Shami excelled with five wickets.

Bangladesh's innings began poorly after winning the toss. Early wickets included Soumya Sarkar and Najmul Hossein Shanto for ducks. Mehidy (5), Tanzid (25), and Mushfiqur Rahim (0) fell quickly, leaving Bangladesh at 35/5. Jaker and Hridoy stabilised the innings, reaching their fifties and building a century partnership. The stand ended at 154 when Shami dismissed Jaker for 68.

Brief contributions from Rishad (18) followed, while Hridoy reached his maiden ODI century before being dismissed for 100. Shami (5/53) and Harshit (3/31) led India's bowling effort, supported by Axar's 2/43.

IND vs BAN Live: How Rohit Sharma messed up Axar Patel's hat-trick chance

Axar Patel came agonisingly close to a sensational hat-trick during his spell against Bangladesh but was denied by a costly dropped catch in India's first game of ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 Group A game at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

The left-arm spinner struck twice in two balls, rattling the opposition, but a moment of misfortune prevented him from completing the rare feat.

Axar was introduced into the attack in the ninth over, with Bangladesh struggling at 35 for 3. His impact was immediate.

On the second ball of his spell, he dismissed Tanzid Hasan (25 off 25) with a sharp delivery that found the outside edge, safely pouched by wicketkeeper KL Rahul.

With the very next ball, he sent Mushfiqur Rahim packing for a golden duck, another edge snapped up by Rahul behind the stumps.

The Indian camp erupted with excitement as Axar stood on the brink of a hat-trick.

The stadium held its breath as Axar ran in for the hat-trick delivery. Jaker Ali, the new batter, was welcomed with two slips and a leg slip in place.

The delivery was precise, angling slightly outside off. Jaker pressed forward in defence but got a thick outside edge that flew towards first slip.

Rohit Sharma, positioned perfectly, had the chance to etch Axar’s name into the record books.

However, the Indian captain fumbled a regulation catch, letting the ball slip through his fingers. Frustrated, Rohit vented his anger by striking the ground repeatedly, aware of the missed opportunity.

Axar, though visibly disappointed, continued his spell with composure.

He conceded just a single run off the final two balls, finishing the over with figures of 2/1.

Bangladesh, at the end of nine overs, found themselves in deeper trouble at 36/5, with Towhid Hridoy (4 off 9) and Jaker Ali (1 off 2) at the crease.

IND vs BAN Live: UPDATE - Pakistan suffer a huge blow
Pakistan suffered a serious blow Thursday when opener Fakhar Zaman was ruled out of the Champions Trophy with an injury ahead of their crunch clash with arch-rivals India. The 34-year-old left-handed batsman was replaced by Imam-ul-Haq, the International Cricket Council said.

Zaman sprained a chest muscle while fielding at the start of Pakistan's game against New Zealand in Karachi on Wednesday, which the hosts lost by 60 runs.

He could not open the innings because of playing rules and instead batted at number four and made a laborious 41-ball 24, showing signs of discomfort.

Zaman has played 86 ODIs, averaging just over 46.

"I have been privileged enough to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride," he wrote on social media.

"Unfortunately I'm now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but surely Allah is the best planner. Grateful for the opportunity.

"I will be backing our boys in green from home. This is only just the beginning, the comeback will be stronger than the setback."

Following Wednesday's defeat in the tournament opener, defending champions Pakistan now must beat India in Dubai in Group A on Sunday to keep alive their chances of reaching the semi-finals.

Bangladesh are the other team in Group A, while Australia, England, South Africa and Afghanistan comprise Group B in the 50-over tournament.

The top two teams from each group qualify for the last four.

IND vs BAN Live: Had doubts if I'd ever play for India again: Shami

After suffering an ankle injury, veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has admitted that there were times when he thought his international career was finished, but he persisted because he was determined to play for his country once more.

Surgery was necessary for Shami's ankle injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup final versus Australia in November.

He missed 14 months of international cricket due to swelling in his left knee, which made his recuperation much more difficult.

"From being in great form during the World Cup to suddenly finding myself on the operating table, from that form to being injured was really tough," Shami told the ICC.

"For the first two months I often doubted whether I would be able to play again as an injury like this followed by a 14-month break can pull you down," he added.

But earlier this month, the 34-year-old made a triumphant return to the international scene by participating in two Twenty20 Internationals and an equal number of One-Day Internationals against England.

Shami will spearhead India's pace attack in the Champions Trophy due to Jasprit Bumrah's injury.

"My first question to the doctor was 'how many days until I can be back on the field'. He said my priority is to get you to walk, then jog and then run and thinking about playing competitive cricket is still a distant goal."

For Shami, the mental shift from being an active athlete to using crutches was difficult.

"I always wondered when I would be able to put my feet on the ground again, someone who is used to running on the field constantly was now in crutches."

A brilliant century from Shubman Gill and Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul powered India to a commanding six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their ICC Champions Trophy opener in Dubai on Thursday.

Chasing 229, India got off to a strong start with a 69-run opening stand before a brief stumble at 144/4. However, Gill’s composed century, alongside KL Rahul’s steady knock, ensured a comfortable win.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill laid a solid foundation, with Rohit attacking Mustafizur Rahman in the sixth over and India crossing the 50-run mark by the eighth over. The partnership ended at 69 when Taskin Ahmed dismissed Rohit for 41 off 36 balls, caught by Rishad Hossain.

Virat Kohli joined Gill but struggled against spin as India reached 100 in 20 overs. Kohli’s 42-run stand with Gill ended when Rishad Hossain had him caught at backward point for 22 off 38 balls.

Gill brought up his fourth consecutive fifty-plus score in ODIs off 69 balls. However, quick wickets of Shreyas Iyer (15) and Axar Patel (8) left India at 144/4 in 30.1 overs.

Gill and KL Rahul steadied the chase, with India reaching the 200-run mark in the 43rd over. Gill then completed his eighth ODI century off 125 balls, striking nine fours and two sixes.

Rahul sealed the win in style with a six, as India finished at 231/4. Gill remained unbeaten on 101, while Rahul contributed 41* off 55 balls.

For Bangladesh, Rishad Hossain took two wickets, while Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman claimed one each.
