NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal pays $11 million settlement to victims in FTX crypto scandal despite minimal insight in the business
An important settlement has been struck by NBA icon and Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal regarding the FTX cryptocurrency incident. In order to make amends to investors who were harmed by buying NFTs he promoted, the basketball legend has agreed to contribute $11 million to a class-action settlement fund. This development comes less than a year after O’Neal was served a court order in May 2023 for his involvement in the controversy.
Shaquille O'Neal is one among numerous well-known celebrities who are facing legal repercussions for supporting the now-defunct bitcoin trading platform, according to the settlement. According to the lawsuit's plaintiffs, Shaq's support convinced them to purchase Astral NFTs. These investors pursued legal action following FTX's demise, which resulted in O'Neal's huge settlement.
Shaq has amassed a thriving business portfolio across multiple businesses since he retired from basketball. His affiliation with FTX, however, casts a shadow over his otherwise successful business endeavours. The dispute has brought attention to the dangers of celebrity sponsorships in unregulated markets such as NFTs and cryptocurrencies.
Shaquille O'Neal tried to disassociate himself from the platform when the FTX story first broke. He explained his minimal role in a 2022 interview with CNBC, saying, "A lot of people think I'm involved. But I was just a paid spokesperson for a commercial.” The legal repercussions continued despite his efforts to distance himself from the matter, ultimately leading to the multimillion-dollar settlement.
Adding further context, O’Neal expressed skepticism about NFTs during the same interview. “I don’t understand it, so I will probably stay away from it until I get a full understanding of what it is. From my experience, it is too good to be true,” he said.
Despite not having a thorough understanding of the goods, Shaq was a crucial part of FTX's marketing campaigns because of his widespread appeal and celebrity status. He now has to deal with the consequences of his endorsement, as a $11 million settlement is expected to compensate investors who lost money.
The FTX scandal has turned into a warning, emphasising the value of due investigation for investors and endorsers in the erratic cryptocurrency market. O'Neal may have been a "paid spokesperson," but his role in the controversy serves as a sobering warning of what may happen when you support risky endeavours.

With his settlement finalized, Shaquille O’Neal is moving forward, but the incident will likely remain a footnote in his storied career as both a basketball star and a business mogul.
