Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball has been fined a whopping $100,000 following his anti-gay comment after his team’s 115-114 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. Ball's comment came while discussing the game's final play, where the Hornets' Grant Williams managed to force Giannis Antetokounmpo into an off-balance jump shot that fell short, hitting the front of the rim. “We loaded up,” Ball said in his post-match interview, adding, “No homo.”
Responding to Ball’s comment, the NBA released a statement calling his remark “an offensive and derogatory comment.” The league fined the Hornets’ star on Sunday.
Later, Hornets head coach Charles Lee responded to the huge penalty, “As an organization, that’s obviously not something we condone,” Lee said. “Our standards and what is required of our players and our environment that we create is really important to us. I spoke to Melo, and he’s obviously very apologetic,” he continued.
The coach went on to add, “From what I’ve seen since I’ve been around him, he loves everyone. He’s a joy to have around in the facility and that’s not typically how he operates.”
The incident has gained a lot of attention putting Ball into a huge controversy. Lee further stated confirming that Ball will not repeat the same in the future. "I look forward to seeing him grow from this moment, but I wanted to start off by saying that we apologize for what happened," the coach said. "He and I talked about it and he definitely said going forward, 'I'm going to be better' and I want to see that happen. So for somebody to use those words and say that out of his mouth, we will make sure to hold him accountable to that," he added.
