Mavericks star P.J. Washington is in the middle of a child support and custody battle with his ex, Brittany Renner. In court filings, Washington claims that Renner’s lawyers threatened to hand him legal papers during a live NBA game if he didn’t agree to her custody demands and also to raise his child support payments from $5,500 a month to $35,000 a month.
P.J. Washington says ex Brittany Renner tried to pressure him with on-court service of papers
Washington says he was threatened with on-court service of legal papers to try to force him to move the custody case to California. Renner’s team also wants him to pay much more in child support because of California’s high cost of living and Washington’s NBA salary.
It’s important to note that no papers were actually handed to him during a game. The threat is part of the court filings as a tactic not an event that really happened.
Washington currently pays $5,500 per month for child support. Renner is asking to increase it to $35,000 per month. The fight also includes which state should handle the case, North Carolina, where it started or California where Renner now lives.
The idea of serving legal papers during a nationally televised NBA game is unusual. Professional athletes usually don’t deal with legal threats in front of fans and cameras. Washington says the threat was meant to pressure him, though such tactics are to create controversy.
Law experts say threatening to serve papers during a big public event can be a strategy to scare the other side into agreeing. But it’s not proof of wrongdoing unless it actually happens. Washington’s court filing is mainly about protecting his rights and objecting to what he calls aggressive legal tactics.
So far, neither Washington nor Renner says any papers were actually handed to him at a game, and the case is still going through the courts.
P.J. Washington’s filings give a glimpse into a very public and high-profile child support battle. It shows how complicated things can get for athletes when their personal lives, money, and careers are all in the spotlight.
