The Philadelphia 76ers' head coach, Nick Nurse, has recently shared a not-so-promising update on Joel Embiid’s return to the roster. The Sixers’ roster is riddled with injuries as several stars, including Joel Embiid, Paul George, Eric Gordon, and Jared McCain, have all been ruled out. In Embiid’s case, his injuries have been a major concern, as many question the star player’s career in the league.
Nick Nurse provides an update on Joel Embiid’s recovery
Joel Embiid’s status has been a major talking point, especially since he was officially ruled out for the season on February 28. The Sixers have been cautious in handling his recovery, but the concern surrounding the star is far from over.
“He has, and again, I don’t wanna speak definitively—I think he’s done seeing all the specialists,” Sixers head coach Nick Nurse revealed before facing a devastating 119-144 loss to the Washington Wizards. “There may be one or—and those kind of turn into more discussions. I kinda just got up to speed on all of it today, but yeah. I think it’s kinda, like, decision time, and there’s so many opinions and weighing all that out and seeing exactly what’s gonna happen. I think we’re close to that point of him making a decision on which route he’s gonna take. Just not quite there yet.”
According to Nurse, Embiid has taken an active role in the process, assessing the risks, probabilities, and long-term ramifications of various treatment options.
“I'd say it's a collaborative decision,” Nurse added. “He's right there involved with these doctors and he's very smart and understanding what all of the ramifications are and what the chances, probabilities, all those kinds of stuff that he's weighing out. He continues to do research and talk to the people, talk to the doctors, all that kind of stuff, but Simon's (Rice) right with him as well.”
The Sixers have dealt with Embiid’s injuries in the past as well. Since being drafted third overall in 2014, he has endured an exhausting list of setbacks, including a bone bruise, meniscus tears, tendinitis, a torn orbital bone, shoulder sprains, and even Bell’s palsy. His latest injury— a meniscus tear that required surgery after Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga landed on his left leg— has left him in limbo.
Still, Embiid’s return is under a huge question mark. “There’s a lot of doctors involved when they make the decision and I think as far as the time frame goes? Yeah. I think it would be soon-ish. But something is gonna happen and he can get back on the road and rehabbing it and being able to do whatever the next steps are,” Nurse said.
