The NBA has intentionally left November 5 game-free to observe Election Day in the United States. This decision reflects the league’s commitment to fostering civic responsibility among its fans and ensuring everyone can participate in the voting process. By clearing the schedule, the NBA aims to eliminate any potential conflict between watching games and casting votes. The move also simplifies voting logistics for players, who can face complications with travel demands, especially if they wish to vote in their home states.
Since 2020, the NBA has emphasized its stance on encouraging fans and players alike to be active voters. Leading up to Election Day, the league and its stars, such as LeBron James, have promoted messages that urge people to head to the polls. Teams have even worn “VOTE” shirts to amplify this message and engage their extensive viewership in the election process.
James Cadogan, the NBA’s National Basketball Social Justice Coalition Executive Director, previously highlighted the league’s reasoning for this approach, stating, “We don’t usually change the schedule for an external event. But voting and Election Day are obviously unique and incredibly important to our democracy.” Cadogan emphasized that the league is invested in “communicating about the importance of civic participation, the importance of registering, the importance of getting out and voting.”
Aside from Election Day, the NBA will pause on two other significant dates this season: Thanksgiving Day (November 28) and Christmas Eve (December 24). Additionally, the league’s schedule will see some flexibility in December, with empty dates set aside to adjust for the outcomes of the NBA Cup. For eager fans, action resumes in full swing with 12 games scheduled on Wednesday, November 6, as the season continues uninterrupted from there.
