Security camera footage revealed Hayes engaged in a heated argument with Sofia Jamora. Following the release of the video, Rachel DeMita slammed the league taking to her social media. “NBA should have a zero tolerance policy for domestic violence like what are we doing,” she wrote on X.

TMZ released the five-and-a-half-minute security camera video from a Ring camera, dated July 28, 2021 at 1:35 a.m. In the footage, Hayes was seen pulling Jamora out of a doorway as she was heard saying, "Stop. Let go of me." Hayes replied, "What the f**k is wrong with you?" The confrontation went on as they moved to the driveway, where Jamora says, "I'm not going to let you hit me anymore," and added, "What the f**k do I look like, a punching bag?" Hayes was a New Orleans Pelicans player at the time.

Hayes was arrested after a domestic disturbance call. The Los Angeles Police arrived at a place in Woodland Hills, California where he was arrested. It was also reported that Hayes resisted a police officer, who sustained an elbow injury after being pushed against the wall by the NBA star. Hayes also received treatment for minor injuries as described by authorities.

In June 2022, he received a sentence that included three years of probation, 450 hours of community service, and a year of weekly domestic violence classes.

However, the NBA did not take any disciplinary measures following his initial investigation of the matter. As the incident went viral in the newly leaked footage of the incident with his ex, the league has reopened the investigation, "As a result of the media report and video posted this morning, we are reopening our investigation," NBA spokesperson Mike Bass told ESPN in a recent statement.
