The New York Knicks came back from 29 points down to win Game 4 of the NBA Finals 107-106 yesterday. And the celebrities inside Madison Square Garden lost every last bit of composure they had.
This wasn't a normal celebrity row night. This was a full-scale A-list meltdown, the good kind- spilling out of MSG, onto 7th Avenue, and into the streets of Manhattan in scenes nobody expected to be documenting the next morning.
Inside MSG: the most famous building in New York
The Game 4 celebrity lineup included Spike Lee, Ben Stiller,
Tracy Morgan, Adam Sandler, Fat Joe, and Chris Rock, the Knicks faithful who show up every single time. Michael J. Fox and his wife Tracy Pollan were there, alongside Nas. Sydney Sweeney brought Scooter Braun. Taylor Swift sat courtside in her "Stevie Knicks" tee with the Haim sisters and Mariska Hargitay. Wu-Tang Clan performed at halftime, a full reunion, Staten Island representing on one of the biggest nights in Knicks history.
And then OG Anunoby tipped in the game-winner with one second left. The building detonated.
Timothée Chalamet went fully feral
Chalamet led the postgame chaos inside MSG, dancing through the hallways with fans, including Ben Stiller, before ripping his shirt off entirely while Kylie Jenner filmed the whole thing. When a reporter caught him and asked how he was feeling, he looked straight into the camera and said one word:
"Beautiful." That's it. That was the quote. New York in a word.
Taylor Swift and the custom tee squad
Swift danced with Este and Alana Haim in their matching custom shirts, "Stevie Knicks," "Knickleback," after the win, then hugged Kylie Jenner in the tunnel. Mariska Hargitay found Jalen Brunson and told him:
"I love you so much. I'm so happy." Nobody was keeping it cool. Nobody was trying to.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky took it to the streets
While celebrities were still losing it inside MSG, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky ended up on the streets of Manhattan shooting hoops with Knicks fans and missing. Rihanna, who rarely does anything publicly without making it a moment, was just out there airballing with regular New Yorkers at midnight. Iconic.
And then NYC went feral
As many as 10,000 fans flooded the streets around MSG, setting off fireworks, blocking traffic, climbing scaffolding, and attempting to flip a taxi. Police took 56 people into custody, and 10 officers were injured. The city had already cancelled the official outdoor watch party before the game after Game 3 celebrations led to 21 arrests, but it didn't matter. New York doesn't need a permit to riot with joy.
Chuck D from Public Enemy was so moved by the win that he painted OG Anunoby's game-winning bucket. Iman Shumpert put on his old Knicks jersey and walked out onto 7th Avenue to celebrate with fans. A Baltimore Ravens quarterback was somewhere in Manhattan taking selfies. And somehow, Mumford & Sons and Tate McRae ended up celebrating the Knicks' victory together inside MSG, a sentence that should not exist but does.
The Knicks are one win away from their first championship since 1973. If they close it out, whatever happened on June 10 will look like a rehearsal.
