San Antonio Spurs star Luke Kornet’s bold stand against Hawks’ Magic City Night sparks heated and emotional NBA debate
Luke Kornet's shocking decision to pull off the Hawks' planned Magic City Night celebration just caused mayhem in the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs center denounced the March 16 event as demeaning to women in a strong Medium blog piece earlier today. The league as a whole is now commenting on the dispute.
Atlanta's contentious theme night premiered on March 16 when the Hawks faced the Orlando Magic. As the squad honors the city's storied strip club, "Magic City Monday" is anticipated to be a major attraction for Atlantans. Kornet's worries are not unique. He claims that the Hawks' choice shocked other players in the league as well.
One basketball player is adamantly against the Eastern Conference team's plans, despite the Atlanta Hawks' recent announcement of their "Magic City Monday" theme night at one of their upcoming NBA games becoming viral.
That institution is Magic City, the strip club that is well-known for, among other reasons, lemon pepper chicken wings so delicious that Lou Williams had to skip NBA bubble games because he stopped in before heading to Orlando.
Kornet stressed that the NBA should value and safeguard the women who regularly support the sport. He voiced serious concern about the mistreatment and harassment of employees in the adult entertainment sector. In a statement supporting women's rights, Kornet implied that the NBA wouldn't benefit from the game's topic. Kornet said Monday:
“The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world... We should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love…”
He continued:
“Regardless of how a woman finds her way into the adult entertainment industry, many in this space experience abuse, harassment, and violence to which they should never be subjected."
Kornet said. He also pointed out that the event could reflect poorly on the NBA as a whole, making the league look “complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.”
In social media and sporting circles, the statement has already generated intense controversy. Luke Kornet of the San Antonio Spurs, however, has voiced his disapproval of the celebration and urged the league to "protect and esteem women." Jami Gertz is adamant about the promotion.
Magic City, according to the Hawks owner, is an "iconic cultural institution" that influenced the development of hip-hop and Atlanta music. She produced "Magic City: An American Fantasy," a five-part STARZ documentary that examined the venue's history.
There are strippers in Magic City in addition to the kitchen, which is why some people object to the promotion. Luke Kornet, a big guy for the Spurs, is one of those individuals. On Monday, he penned an open letter to the league requesting that the Hawks call off the event.
The celebration gains a local character from the Lou Williams-named lemon-pepper wings. Rapper T.I., who will perform during the Hawks game, is one of the prominent Atlanta people scheduled to appear on "Magic City Monday." For many years, the Magic City nightclub has been well-known for its popular wings and women.
Although the Hawks have not yet addressed Kornet's remarks, the incident has undoubtedly generated discussion. While some fans, like Kornet, think it's a move in the wrong direction, others see it as an enjoyable way to showcase Atlanta's culture.
