Skip Bayless accuses LeBron James of trying to “push Austin Reaves out the back door”

The Los Angeles Lakers have recently found themselves at the center of a controversy. After LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul, suggested a trade involving the Lakers’ shooting guard Austin Reaves, it quickly spread and drew heavy attention from fans and analysts alike towards both the franchise and James himself.

Despite LeBron James insisting that he had nothing to do with the suggestion, the conversation kept growing. Lakers analysts and former players are questioning his role, indicating whether Rich Paul would make such a remark on his own, publicly, without some kind of prior discussion.

Skip Bayless questions LeBron James’ role in Austin Reaves trade controversy

On the recent “Game over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul” podcast, Rich Paul made a sudden remark on the possibility of trading Austin Reaves in exchange for Memphis Grizzlies’ star center Jaren Jackson. Paul pointed out that the team needed a strong defense and that such a trade would allow for achieving the team's long-term goals. His comments drew a lot of attention because Reaves is one of the most popular players in the Lakers franchise and has been delivering some exceptional performances of his career lately.

Despite performing well, a recent calf injury has put Austin Reaves out of games. The situation, however, became more intense when Reaves’ own agent reportedly spoke to Paul following the Lakers’ win on Tuesday, showing how frustrated the team was about the matter being made public. When asked about the controversy, LeBron James quickly distanced himself, saying, “AR knows how I feel about him. I hope AR or his camp don't look at me and think this is words from me are coming through Rich”. He emphasized that Rich Paul speaks for himself. However, not everyone accepted that explanation. Veteran analyst Skip Bayless questioned James’ response, “He clearly had conspired with Rich Paul about this. Le-Cron James is trying to push Austin Reaves out of the back door. He wants you gone, AR. Now you know”, Bayless wrote on X, suggesting James might be influencing decisions behind the scenes. Bayless pointed out that similar situations have happened before in James’ career and argued that his denial in the matter didn’t match past behavior, indicating how star players often influence team decisions.

Apart from this ongoing controversy, the Los Angeles Lakers have been dealing with issues regarding the team's defense, as by mid-January, they have been at the bottom of the league, raising serious questions about the team's ability to compete this season. Austin Reaves, however, remains closely involved with the team despite his injury. Head coach JJ Redick has spoken highly of Reaves for staying connected with his teammates. With free agency coming this offseason, it will play a key role in determining what comes next for him.
