Former NBA star Carmelo Anthony sparked a heated debate after sharing his thoughts on the return of Jayson Tatum to the Boston Celtics lineup. As the Celtics prepare for a potential late-season boost from their franchise player, Anthony’s remarks on the standout Celtics star turned out to be an eyebrow raiser.
The discussion gained even more traction when Tatum’s longtime trainer, Drew Hanlen, pushed back publicly. His response on social media ignited a wider conversation about Tatum’s role, the Celtics’ chemistry this season, and how the team will adjust with its star forward returning from a serious injury.

Boston’s season took a dramatic turn last spring when Tatum suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the New York Knicks.
Many believed the injury would derail the Celtics’ short-term title hopes. Instead, the team regrouped and produced one of the league’s most surprising campaigns.
Led by Jaylen Brown, Boston climbed near the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 41-21 record. Brown’s breakout year placed him in the MVP conversation. He has averaged 28.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, and five assists per game while carrying the offensive load for long stretches.
Speaking on his podcast, Anthony explained how he believes Tatum should approach his return.
“Now it’s like JT, what are you going to sacrifice? But now I held the fort down for you and the whole organization. JT has to be very mature about this situation. It’s no ego, no pride. We got a chance to come back and win a championship. So let me just put my pride and ego aside for these next 3 months and continue to let JB steer the ship,” Anthony said.
He expanded on that view while discussing the Celtics’ locker room dynamic.
“There’s no egos, there’s no pride, like we got a chance to come back and win a championship, so let me just put my pride and my ego to the side for these next three months and continue to let JB steer the ship, ’cause he’s proving that he’s doing it. He’s doing it at an MVP level on both sides of the court,” Melo added.
Jayson Tatum's trainer slams Carmelo Anthony over his comment on the Celtics star
Anthony’s remarks quickly reached Tatum’s inner circle. Hanlen responded directly on social media, questioning the narrative surrounding the Celtics star.
“The irony of Carmelo Anthony trying to tell Jayson Tatum how to win…” wrote Hanlen on X.
The trainer later clarified his statement, noting that his comment was not meant to diminish Anthony’s legacy in the sport.
“Melo is a hall of famer, gold medalist & one of the best bucket-getters in NBA history,” Hanlen wrote on X. “In fact, outside of Kobe, he was the player we studied/stole from more than anyone when JT was in high school. My tweet wasn’t downplaying how good he was as a player. It was addressing Melo’s comments suggesting JT needed to take a backseat in order to win. JT is an NBA champion & 14-6 in playoff series. He knows how to win.”
Meanwhile, Boston awaits Tatum’s official return to game action.
