Will Ja Morant Play Tonight Against the Atlanta Hawks? Latest on the Memphis Grizzlies Star’s Injury Report (December 21, 2024)

There is a chance that Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant won’t be available for the team’s upcoming game against the Atlanta Hawks. At the time of writing, Morant is listed as “doubtful” for tomorrow’s game, owing to some lower back soreness. The Grizzlies embarrassed Golden State a couple of nights ago by pulling off a 51-point victory, but might’ve lost their star player Morant in the process.

The 25-year-old took a scary fall a few minutes into the third quarter of their game against the Dubs. Morant was driving to the basket when he collided with Warriors center Kevon Looney and fell on his back. Following his scary fall, Morant was visibly uncomfortable and held onto his back while rising to his feet. Morant returned to the floor to shoot free throws, but couldn’t continue and had to be escorted to the locker room.

The 25-year-old was only in action for 17 minutes before being pulled from the match due to his back issues. Morant has been dealing with recurring back and knee injuries ever since the start of the 2024/25 NBA season.

It is a big loss for the Grizzlies every time Morant sits out. However, head coach Taylor Jenkins has done an excellent job in Morant’s absence. The Grizzlies are currently second in the West and have a record of 19-9. Furthermore, the team is fourth in offensive rating, fifth in defensive rating, and fourth in net rating. If the Grizzlies continue to perform this way, Jenkins will end up making a solid case for the Coach of the Year award.

It is also worth noting that Jaren Jackson Jr. has been crucial for the Grizzlies during Morant’s absence. The 25-year-old is currently averaging 21.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting a respectable 51.8% from the field. Jackson is also crucial on defense and averages 1.7 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. Without him, the Grizzlies wouldn’t be in such a strong position. Hopefully, the team can continue to thrive until Ja Morant is available regularly.
