India v New Zealand, Mohali ODI: We learn from our batsmen how to bowl, says Southee

MOHALI: New Zealand batsmen got their bowlers together and told them how to bowl before going out to defend a par 242 in the Delhi ODI. That's how the visitors managed to cut India's wings, win and level the series, Tim Southee told reporters before the third ODI here on Saturday.

NZ captain Kane Williamson scored his side's first century of the tour in Delhi, adding a 120 runs with Tom Latham. The two then gave cues to bowl, resulting in their side's six-run win.

"I think we learn from our batsmen. Our batsmen spent some time on the crease, grafted. Kane scored a brilliant hundred. He knew what lengths and what balls were hard to hit. We took that information before going to bowl in the second innings," Southee said in a press conference.

But the Kiwi allrounder said the track here at the IS Bindra

PCA Stadium

is going to be a lot different and require a different strategy.

"I think we can see from Delhi that it (the pitch) can change a lot very quickly. Nice to go out there and see some grass on the wicket; but having played here a few times, it's traditionally a pretty good surface for batsmen as well. I don't read too much into it with a day left (before the match)," he said.

It was New Zealand's first win as well on tour in Delhi, but Southee said they neither dwell into the past nor look too far ahead.
