MUMBAI: Inspired by their skipper Khizar Dafedar's all-round performance, Vengsarkar XI beat Shastri XI in the final to clinch the Ultratech Cup at Mahul, Chembur, on Tuesday.
Dafedar scored 51 and took four wickets for just nine runs to star in his team's crushing innings and 37 run- victory in the summit clash.
On Tuesday, Vengsarkar XI, resuming on 71 for one, declared after making 218 for six in 58 overs, thus securing a 101-run first innings lead over Shastri XI lead .
1x1 polls
Khizar Dafedar and Jayesh Pokhare (23) added 61 for the third wicket and Osama Parkar remain not out on 58 runs with eight hits to the fence.
Shastri XI could not get going in the second innings as well and were skittled out on 64 in just 24.3 overs , with the medium pace of Mohammed Akram (3/8) and the leg spin of Dafedar proving handful for them. Except Siddharth Akre (34 with 7 fours), no other batsman from Shastri XI could get into double figures. Dafedar was adjudged as the 'Man of the Final'.
Siddharth Akre of Shastri XI, who scored 281 runs in the tourney, won the 'Man of the Series' and the 'Best Batsman' awards. Bhavin Darjee, who took 18 wickets in the tournament, was adjudged as the 'Best Bowler,' while Rudra Dhande was bagged the 'Best Fielder' award.
On the occasion, former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar felicitated Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer for becoming the highest run-getter in Ranji Trophy. Vengsarkar felt that a technically perfect batsman like Jaffer may still stage a national comeback, given the way the Indian batsmen are floundering on the Australian tour.
Vengsarkar advised Jaffer that he must revert to opening the innings instead of coming in at No 4. Jaffer told the youngsters to work hard and play with dedication in order to achieve success.
