Jammu Kashmir Election Results 2024 Highlights: National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah won the Budgam Assembly seat in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, defeating PDP's Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi by a margin of over 18,000 votes.
The counting of votes started at 8am across 28 centers for 90 assembly seats contested over three phases.
As the final results came out, JKNC led by winning 42 seats, crossing the majority mark with alliance partner Congress who got 6 seats. BJP managed to secure 29 seats in the state.
The National Conference (NC) emerged as the major winner in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, marking a strong comeback after a decade. Led by Omar Abdullah, the party formed a pre-poll alliance with Congress, successfully defeating its arch-rival Mehbooba Mufti's PDP and the BJP. Omar Abdullah, who contested from Ganderbal and Budgam, won in both constituencies. This victory reinforces the NC’s position in the region after last being in power from 2009 to 2014 under Omar Abdullah’s leadership.
These elections were historic as they held after a decade and the first state elections after the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution which gave the state special status.

People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti voiced strong criticism of the incoming government in UT of Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as "toothless tiger" and claiming its chief minister will be a "rubber stamp" and a "glorified mayor" of a "municipality."

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah has ruled out any possibility of a post-poll alliance with BJP to form the next govt in J&K after results of the assembly elections are declared.
Abdullah said any party that aligns with BJP would “vanish” in J&K. “The vote we got here is the vote against BJP,” said the former J&K CM, whose party contested the three-phase election (Sept 18 to Oct 1) in alliance with Congress.
“The difficulties they (BJP) put the Muslims in, bulldozed their shops, houses, mosques, and schools — do you think we will go with them?” PTI quoted him as saying. “I think our people will not vote for BJP. If they (BJP) think they will form the govt, then they live in cuckoo’s world.”NC vice president Omar Abdullah said the party would prefer to sit in opposition rather than forge an alliance with BJP.
The statements came in response to speculation of potential post-election alliances, particularly if neither NC nor BJP secures the required number.

Cannot recommend nominated MLAs’ names before new govt is formed in J&K: Opposition
Opposition parties have strongly objected to ruling BJP’s move to ensure that the five nominated MLAs are appointed before the govt is formed in Jammu and Kashmir. With the inclusion of five nominated MLAs, the J&K legislative assembly will expand to 95 members, increasing the majority threshold to 48 seats. Since the Union govt will recommend the Lt Governor to pick the MLAs, critics say they will toe Centre’s line.

Karra said, “The alliance will have a comfortable majority, and both partners shall have very good numbers,” predicting that the final results would surpass the exit poll projections.
With PDP suggesting it may support NC-Congress alliance in forming a govt in the event of a hung assembly, Karra said any party sharing the common goal of keeping BJP out of office in the Union territory is welcome to join the coalition.
Karra was a founding member of PDP when ex-CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed established the party in 1999. He joined Congress in 2017 after leaving PDP, now led by Mehbooba Mufti. Karra gained prominence in 2014 by defeating NC chief Abdullah in the Srinagar Lok Sabha election.

Given LG Manoj Sinha is the Centre’s nominee, NC and Congress fear he may utilise the provision to help BJP in case of a fractured mandate, and claim he can exercise his powers only on the aid and advice of the CM.

Stringent security arrangements have been put in place at all district headquarters in Jammu & Kashmir for the counting of votes on Tuesday for the 90-member assembly, paving way for first elected govt in the Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370 five years ago.
