Adam Peters: Commanders GM navigates quarterback dilemma ahead of NFL draft

NEW DELHI: Adam Peters faced immediate inquiries about the team's quarterback situation, especially with the No. 2 pick in April's draft in his first appearance at the NFL Scouting Combine as the new general manager of the Washington Commanders.

Peters, previously the assistant GM with the San Francisco 49ers, is no stranger to quarterback decisions, having been part of the team that drafted Iowa State's Brock Purdy with the final pick in the 2022 draft. Now, with a much higher draft position, Peters acknowledged the need to find a new quarterback for Washington, potentially aiming for a franchise-changing selection.

The Commanders, sitting ahead of QB-needy teams like New England but behind Chicago, have a prime opportunity to select a top quarterback prospect. Peters revealed plans to meet with quarterback prospects during the Combine, emphasizing the importance of getting to know the individual beyond their on-field talent.

"That's just the beginning of the process," Peters stated. "It's a huge part of really any position, is getting to know the person. That's where we've always found, in scouting, you make the biggest mistakes more so on the person than the actual talent."

Among the standout prospects are Caleb Williams of Southern California, Drake Maye of North Carolina, and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels of LSU. The mobility of Williams and Daniels aligns with the offensive preferences of new Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, known for his work with mobile quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Kyler Murray.

While Peters expressed a liking for Sam Howell, a fifth-round pick in 2022 by the previous regime, he emphasized the need for competition in the quarterback room. Peters acknowledged that the decision, whether to use the No. 2 pick on a quarterback or address the position later, is far from finalized.

"We still have a lot of work to do, whether it's that pick or later," Peters concluded. The Commanders' head coach, Dan Quinn, was also scheduled to discuss the team's plans later in the day.
