NEW DELHI: Washington Commanders have reportedly secured the services of Adam Peters, the assistant general manager from the San Francisco 49ers, as their new general manager. Multiple outlets broke the news on Friday, confirming Peters' ascent to the pivotal role.

Peters emerged as one of the top contenders for the position, alongside Ian Cunningham, the assistant general manager for the Chicago Bears. The decision to hire Peters was made after a rigorous interview process, with both candidates completing the initial round of discussions on Wednesday.

At 44 years old, Peters brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His journey in the NFL includes tenures with the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos before joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. Initially serving as the vice president of player personnel, Peters climbed the ranks, earning a promotion to assistant general manager in 2021.

Working alongside 49ers general manager John Lynch, Peters played a pivotal role in building a formidable roster, contributing to the team's recent successes. Notable accomplishments include the selection of quarterback Brock Purdy in the 2022 draft and orchestrating a trade with the Carolina Panthers to acquire star running back Christian McCaffrey in October 2022.

The 49ers, under Peters' influence, secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC with a 12-5 record, enjoying a first-round bye in the playoffs. In contrast, the Washington Commanders struggled with a 4-13 record, finishing at the bottom of the NFC East and missing the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons.

As Peters takes the helm in Washington, his immediate challenges include the recruitment of a new head coach following the recent firing of Ron Rivera. Additionally, he faces the critical decision of determining whether Sam Howell, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft, is the franchise's long-term solution at quarterback.

The outgoing general manager, Martin Mayhew, who held the position for the past three seasons, awaits a determination of his status within the organization, as reported by NFL Network.
