Underwood, from Belville High School in Belville, Michigan is the highest-ranked commitment to sign with the program since Rashan Gary when he signed as a defensive tackle in the 2016 recruiting cycle. Underwood had been committed to Brian Kelly and the Tigers since Jan. 6. He made the massive flip announcement with signing day just under two weeks away.

The highly sought-after recruit faced scholarship offers from several major programs, such as Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia, before finally committing to LSU. Last season, he was the Gatorade Michigan Player of the Year after tossing for 3,329 yards and 44 touchdowns, while he had only three interceptions.

Underwood was born on August 19, 2007, in Belleville, Michigan. He attended Belleville High School in Belleville. Underwood completed 12 of his 21 passing attempts for 284 yards and five touchdowns during his freshman season. In addition he had a rushing play of 62 yards and a touchdown, which helped Belleville defeat Rochester Adams High School. In his freshman campaign, Underwood threw for 2,888 yards and 39 touchdowns to just four interceptions, and also added six scores on the ground.

For his performance on the season, Underwood earned his first National Award as he was selected MaxPreps Player of the Year. In his sophomore season, Underwood would again lead his team to a State Championship as he earned MaxPreps Player of the Year in the State of Michigan. During his junior season, Underwood threw for 3,165 yards and 40 touchdowns to only two interceptions, and added 160 yards rushing with seven more touchdowns, and after winning his first 38 games of his career, Underwood lost to Southfield A&T in the State Championship game.

During his junior season, Underwood was recognized as Michigan High School Football Player of the Year. Entering his senior season, Underwood was listed as the top-ranked quarterback and top overall prospect in the class of 2025. Underwood also had offers from school like LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, Penn State and Michigan. Ultimately, Underwood opted to commit to play college football for the LSU Tigers. On November 21st, 2024, Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan.
