“Character would be destroyed”: NFL legend blasts Geno Auriemma over apology after heated clash with Dawn Staley

Recently, NFL star Seth Joyner reacted to the situation on X and made his stance clear. He wrote, “If this were reversed, the public outcry would be for Dawn Staley’s job, and her character would be forever destroyed!”

He further added, “He couldn’t even say her name! I can’t wait for the #ContritionPolice to chime in! Y’all are quick to condemn players for a lack of being contrite in their apologies! I’m looking forward to that same energy from your pens and commentaries!! Geno Auriemma said, ‘I said what I had to say yesterday!’ In other words, I meant that ish! This day after a forced attempt at an apology carries zero weight!



Many fans reacted to the post, saying, “I just hope she can ignore the drama and concentrate on winning another national championship.”


Another fan said, “This apology needs to be on camera and directed to Dawn Staley!! This is a PR apology. He won't see a camera until the start of next season, and no one will hold him accountable.”One more fan added, “So true!”


His words came right after the post-game drama earlier that day. South Carolina had just beaten UConn 62-48 in the NCAA semifinal. As the final buzzer sounded, Auriemma got into a heated verbal exchange with Staley, a moment that surprised players and viewers.


After the game, Auriemma explained his frustration. He claimed Staley did not shake his hand before tip-off and said he waited at center court. However, videos from inside the arena showed Staley greeting him and his staff near the bench before the game began.


That contradiction quickly fueled backlash. Auriemma did not back down immediately. In his post-game remarks, he said he stood by his words. The response drew criticism. Then, he issued a formal apology. He admitted his reaction was out of line and said the focus should have been on South Carolina’s performance.


Still, Joyner’s reaction kept the story alive. He raised a larger point about how situations like this are judged. According to him, the reaction would have been far harsher if Staley had behaved the same way.


For now, Staley has shifted her focus. Speaking to reporters, she said there are no distractions and her team is locked in on chasing the national championship. Joyner’s remarks, though, have ensured this story is far from over.
