Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs No. 15 jersey sales have taken a surprising hit, reflecting a challenging season for the three-time Super Bowl champion. Once sitting at No. 2 in 2024, just behind Saquon Barkley, Mahomes has now fallen to No. 22 in 2025, according to NFL Shop’s latest rankings. This drop highlights how on-field performance and public perception can directly influence a star athlete’s merchandise popularity. Fans have taken notice of a season that didn’t go as planned for the Chiefs and their star quarterback.
The decline comes after a string of setbacks for Mahomes. In February, he and the Chiefs were soundly defeated by Barkley and the Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl. Hoping to bounce back the following season, Mahomes faced another blow: the Chiefs missed the playoffs due to an uneven record, and in a critical final game, he suffered a torn ACL. The injury required immediate surgery, leaving fans anxious about his return. Mahomes shared a mix of emotions on Instagram, posting a photo walking off the field with his helmet down, followed by another of him celebrating a touchdown in the end zone, hinting at both his struggles and determination.
Patrick Mahomes’ recovery and return timeline
Despite the injury, optimism surrounds Mahomes’ comeback. Chiefs vice president of sports medicine and performance Rick Burkholder told reporters that Mahomes’ recovery “ballpark” is roughly nine months, potentially allowing him to return for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. Burkholder emphasized, "Every player is different. Every sport is different. Every position is different," adding that Mahomes “is so in tune to what he does, he does it a little quicker.”
In the meantime, NFL fans have shifted their attention to other stars. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has climbed to the No. 1 jersey spot, while Patriots’ Drake Maye now sits at No. 2. Other top sellers include Fred Warner, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and CeeDee Lamb. Mahomes’ slide serves as a reminder that even elite athletes are not immune to fluctuations in popularity, particularly when injuries and team struggles dominate headlines. Yet with rehab underway, all eyes are on the quarterback’s potential triumphant return next season.
