Coach Mike Macdonald explains the simple formula behind that turned the Seattle Seahawks’ defense into a Super Bowl powerhouse
The Seattle Seahawks didn’t stumble into the Super Bowl. According to head coach Mike Macdonald, their dominant defense is the result of doing the simplest things right, over and over again. As Seattle prepares for Super Bowl LX, Macdonald has made it clear that the foundation of their success has nothing to do with tricks or shortcuts.
That mindset has been reinforced daily by the coaching staff. Macdonald credited outside linebackers coach Chris Partridge for helping install the EAT system, which stands for effort, angle, and tackle. The concept is simple but demanding. Every defender is responsible for doing their job correctly on every snap, regardless of situation or opponent. The results have been historic. By DVOA standards, which measure defensive efficiency while adjusting for opponent strength and game context, Seattle’s defense ranks among the best units the league has ever seen. Aaron Schatz, the creator of DVOA and chief analytics officer at FTN Fantasy, ranked the Seahawks sixth all time when playoff performances are included.
Only a handful of legendary defenses rank higher, including the 1985 Bears, the early 1990s Washington teams, the late 1980s 49ers, the 2007 Patriots, and the 1996 Packers. That places Seattle in elite company and highlights the consistency of Macdonald’s approach. This is not new territory for him. Before arriving in Seattle, Macdonald led the Baltimore Ravens defense to a top seven DVOA finish during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The same principles have carried over, and now they are on the sport’s biggest stage.
Seattle’s final test comes against the New England Patriots, led by quarterback Drake Maye and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. A strong performance on Sunday could push this Seahawks defense even higher on the all-time list. The Super Bowl will be played February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Seattle is chasing its second Lombardi Trophy, while New England is seeking a seventh championship, which would break its tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
For Macdonald, though, the goal remains unchanged. Do the basics. Finish plays. Let the rest follow.

Why Mike Macdonald believes fundamentals built Seattle’s Super Bowl defense
Throughout the season, the Seahawks have played fast, disciplined, and physical football. While outside observers point to rankings and analytics, Macdonald believes the real difference comes down to fundamentals. Tackling properly, finishing plays, and executing assignments have defined Seattle’s identity on defense, especially when games tighten late. At a pre Super Bowl press conference, Macdonald explained that everything starts with technique and repetition. “We drill the fundamentals of tackling and finishing every day,” Macdonald said. “We do it as a team, we do it in our warmup before games. It's part of our DNA and the guys take a lot of pride in it.”That mindset has been reinforced daily by the coaching staff.
