Commanders fire three coaches in one day as Kliff Kingsbury, Joe Whitt Jr., and Bobby Johnson exit

The Washington Commanders wasted little time reshaping their coaching staff on Tuesday. By the end of the day, Washington had parted ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, marking one of the most aggressive staff shakeups across the league so far this offseason.

The Commanders’ coaching purge began with the departure of Kliff Kingsbury, who lasted just one season as the team’s offensive coordinator. Shortly after, Washington also moved on from defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., confirming a complete reset at the coordinator level.



Later in the day, the team dismissed offensive line coach Bobby Johnson after two seasons, according to Washington Post reporter Nicki Jhabvala. The move capped off a day that saw three coaches exit the organization, with more changes potentially on the horizon as Washington continues evaluating its staff.

Kingsbury’s departure quickly became one of the most discussed moves of the day. Reports indicated that several Commanders offensive players, including rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, were caught off guard by the decision.



Washington’s defensive staff was not spared in the overhaul. Joe Whitt Jr. was also let go as the Commanders evaluated a defense that struggled for consistency throughout the season.
