In the wake of the devastating flash floods that have taken place in Central Texas, football took a tangible turn. With heartbreak mounting across the region, the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans are stepping up in a big way. They are partnering with the NFL Foundation to pledge $1.5 million in aid to support families affected by this unimaginable tragedy.
The catastrophic flooding, which began earlier last week and worsened by the weekend. It has left a trail of loss and destruction in its path. The move this time isn’t about touchdowns or Super Bowls; it's more of a shoulder for help.
Central Texas flash floods updates and the team’s contribution
Over 70 people have tragically lost their lives, including at least 28 children in Kerr County alone. Perhaps most heart-wrenching is the fate of 11 campers and one counselor who remain missing after the flooding reached a beloved summer camp.
As Texas officials warned of a potential new
“wall of water” forming over the weekend, evacuations expanded and the crisis deepened. However, according to the Department of Homeland Security, 850 people were put in a safe place, according to CNN.
On Sunday, the NFL announced that its two Texas-based teams, the Cowboys and the Texans, were joining forces with the league’s official foundation to deliver $1.5 million in relief funding.
“The National Football League's two Texas-based teams - the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans - are uniting with the NFL Foundation to support the victims' families and survivors of the heartbreaking floods in central Texas. Together they will contribute $1.5 million to provide both immediate assistance and long-term resources to those most impacted by the catastrophic flooding.”The Texans moved quickly, pledging $500,000 on Saturday to help provide emergency support to the hardest-hit communities. By Sunday, the Cowboys had matched the Texans’ generosity with another $500,000, bringing the team total to $1 million. The NFL Foundation contributed the remaining $500,000, completing the $1.5 million pledge.
How will the $1.5 million help rebuild
While the specific breakdown of how each dollar will be used hasn’t been publicly detailed, past relief efforts give a clear blueprint. Funds will likely flow through trusted organizations such as the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, United Way of Greater Houston, and The Salvation Army’s critical response team. These partners have the resources, personnel, and logistical reach to offer both immediate aid and long-term recovery assistance to families devastated by the floods.
From providing shelter and meals to rebuilding homes and offering emotional support, this donation aims to bring hope and stability back to communities reeling from loss. And because both the Cowboys and Texans are deeply entrenched in their local communities, they’ve proven over the years that their support is both heartfelt and impactful.
This isn’t the first time the two franchises have shown up during a crisis. Back in 2017, after Hurricane Harvey pummeled Houston, the Cowboys and Texans joined forces again to help.
In the coming days, the Cowboys and Texans are also expected to launch additional fundraising initiatives. Whether it’s hosting donation drives, setting up relief booths at stadium events, or selling merchandise where proceeds benefit flood victims, both teams have a track record of mobilizing their massive fan bases to amplify support.
