“He can’t go first-ballot”: Rob Gronkowski’s severe Hall of Fame reaction puts Andy Reid in the spotlight after Belichick snub

Rob Gronkowski did not mince words regarding Bill Belichick being snubbed by the NFL Hall of Fame. It came as an absolute shock, hitting hard for Patriots fans and the team itself. For Gronkowski, in addition to defending his old coach, he went a step further and argued that the latest decision should change how future coaching legends are treated.

That includes Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who can’t be a first-ballot Hall of Famer now, according to Gronkowski. The frustration was visible as he talked to Front Office Sports, making it clear that Belichick should have been honored immediately. He also believes that the Hall of Fame set a low standard by leaving him out.

Gronkowski’s message is loud, but the bigger issue is what the Hall of Fame is signaling

Gronskowski said, “Coach Belichick needs to be in the Hall of Fame, and it needs to be a first ballot. Now there’s no such thing as a first-ballot Hall of Fame coach. No other coach ever in history should go first-ballot. There’s a guy out there, Andy Reid, but he can’t go first-ballot now because coach Belichick wasn’t first-ballot.”


Belichick helped shape Gronkowski’s career and built the Patriots dynasty that defined a generation. Seeing Belichick and Robert Kraft miss the first ballot understandably felt like a slap in the face, as stated by the former tight end. The Reid angle that he is bringing in makes for a complicated situation as the coach is one of the rare coaches who has delivered long-term success across different eras and franchises.

Reid is a three-time Super Bowl winner, has led teams to the playoffs year after year, and is entering his 28th season as a head coach. His Chiefs have been one of the league’s most consistent winners, making the postseason 11 times in 13 seasons under his leadership. That is why many fans see Gronkowski’s suggestion as punishment aimed at the wrong person.

They are pointing out how Belichick being overlooked should not automatically mean Reid gets held back too. Now, the real concern becomes much bigger. If someone with multiple Lombardi trophies, decades of dominance, and an undeniable legacy can miss out, then the Hall of Fame process suddenly feels less certain.
