In a distressing turn of events, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered another significant head injury during Miami's Week 2 loss to the Bills.
In the third quarter, Tagovailoa had the Dolphins knocking on the door of the end zone, desperately trying to chip away at Buffalo’s three-touchdown lead. On a pivotal 4th-and-4 from the 13-yard line, he fought through the defense in a determined scramble, seeking to secure the first down and potentially more.
Tagovailoa took a hard hit from Bills safety Damar Hamlin, lowering his head as contact forced his neck to snap. The impact sent him crashing to the ground.
He lay there for several minutes while players from both teams knelt in concern around him. Unfortunately, Tagovailoa did not return to the game.
Details on Tua Tagovailoa’s injury
He eventually walked off the field on his own before being escorted to the medical tent. After a concussion diagnosis, Tagovailoa returned to the locker room, where he stayed for the remainder of the game.
In the fourth quarter, "Thursday Night Football" sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung delivered encouraging news, reporting that Tagovailoa had regained full control of all his extremities.
"He was in good spirits," head coach Mike McDaniel said of his starting quarterback after the game. "...I was worried about my guy. It's not something you ever want to be a part of." (via The Sporting News)
How long will Tua Tagovailoa be sidelined?
There’s no clear timeline for Tua Tagovailoa’s return. He has to go through a series of steps to clear the NFL’s concussion protocol, so he’s definitely out for at least one game.
Since this is Tagovailoa’s third official concussion, the Dolphins will be extra cautious with him. If he’s placed on injured reserve, he’d miss at least four games but still need to pass concussion protocol to come back.
With the Dolphins having a bye in Week 6, it’s possible Tagovailoa could sit out the next three games and possibly return in Week 7, which would be over a month from now.
Some, like Tony Gonzalez from "Thursday Night Football," are even suggesting that Tagovailoa might need to think about retiring to protect his long-term health.
"I'm thinking retirement here," Gonzalez mentioned in the postgame show. "To me, it seems like a no-brainer. The brain, this is is something that can affect you long-term. For me, it's time to move on."
