They scored first in overtime and needed just one stop to get to the promised land. Deebo Samuel discussed the mental effects of losing two Super Bowls in his six-year career on the St. Brown Podcast, highlighting the mental effects of both Super Bowl losses to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Deebo Samuel opened up on losing two Super Bowls to Patrick Mahomes

Deebo Samuel faced his toughest season in 2024 with the San Francisco 49ers, who struggled to meet expectations. His high salary and inconsistent performance led to criticism from fans. However, the 49ers' two Super Bowl losses in his six-year career have also impacted Samuel. During an appearance on the St. Brown Podcast, Samuel discussed the mental effects of these losses on the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Not gonna lie, losing the Super Bowl, it puts you in depression. You go months without talking to people, wanting to be seen… Losing the Super Bowl is one of the worst feelings ever. Think about it in our position. We just went through camp, we just went through the whole season, and we got here, we lose, and now you back to work in 3 weeks. And you’re about to do it all over again. Losing the Super Bowl is crazy. I lost in the Super Bowl twice to the same team.”

The 49ers had a commanding lead in the fourth quarter in both games, but the Chiefs came back to win the championship. In 2024, Kansas City also won 28-18 in Week 7, which gave him a championship ring. The veteran also revealed he was among the few who wasn't so confident about his team's chances of stopping Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense in overtime.

He said, “I remember Jauan Jennings, we on the sideline, and they (KC) just got the ball back and they needed 3 to tie and go into overtime. And Jauan Jennings is there like 'yeah, we about to win the Super Bowl', and me, I’ve been there and played Pat Mahomes in 2019. We were up 10 with like 4 minutes left and lost by 10. I’ve seen it. So I’m like, 'Bro, just relax. Let our defense do what it’s gonna do.'”

Mahomes led the Chiefs to a game-winning touchdown drive, breaking the 49ers' hearts for the second time in the Super Bowl in four years. Wide receiver Samuel compared watching Mahomes to watching Tom Brady dissect teams late in games. He added, "They driving and I’m like damn, I see it. Him (Mahomes) with the ball is like Tom Brady back in the day. It’s like at the end of the day, nobody wants to play them running quarterbacks. As good as he is, you just gotta pray.”

Samuel signed a three-year, $71.5 million contract extension after the 2021 season, starting in 2023. It was one of the biggest deals in the league at the time. Samuel's cap hit in 2024 was $12.55 million, and then it goes up to $15.82 million in 2025. However, since he has void years, he will still be on the 49ers' salary cap until 2029.
