Tom Brady never framed his retirement as a sudden loss of ability. Instead, it came from a quieter place, shaped by years of pressure that built up away from the spotlight. Long after the final whistle, the weight of personal life began to matter as much as the physical grind. That balance, he admits now, finally tipped.
In a rare moment of openness, Brady connected the end of his NFL journey to what was happening at home. The decision, made official in 2023, was not about failing to compete. It was about knowing when continuing came at too high a personal cost.
Tom Brady reflects on retirement as personal life reshaped his priorities
Tom Brady shared his thoughts during an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, where he acknowledged that family strain influenced his choice to walk away. Reflecting on his final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brady spoke with clarity and restraint.
“My last season was tough,” he said. “I was going through, I had a lot of family issues. You know, it just took a lot out of me in terms of my ability to continue to play. I had 23 years of it, so I didn't feel like I was missing anything retiring.”
His love for football never faded, but the experience changed as time passed. Winning no longer brought the same satisfaction it once did. “When I got older, I almost enjoyed practice more than playing. Because playing, it was a relief to win. It's never satisfying, even for me. You know, sometimes winning and not winning like you would expect,” Brady explained.
He compared his career to a marathon, where the hardest part is not the beginning or the end, but the long stretch in between. “Everyone loves to run the first four miles of the marathon, and everyone loves to run the last two miles of the marathon. It's those middle 20 miles that are hard,” he said.
Now linked to the Las Vegas Raiders as a part-owner, Brady’s legacy is secure. His words offer something rarer than trophies: an honest look at how even the most decorated careers are shaped by life beyond the game, including his relationship with Gisele Bündchen.
