In the 1993 season, Emmitt Smith did not show up on the first day of training camp.

The star running back had not shown up for four weeks because of a contract dispute with Jerry Jones. He was staying in shape by working out in his hometown, Pensacola, Florida.

Addressing Jerry Jones, Smith told a reporter then, “I’m willing to cooperate if you’re willing to cooperate with me.”

In the docuseries, Smith explained, “Here’s my point of view, I’m a proven commodity now. 1990 Rookie of the Year. 1991 and 1992 led the league in rushing.

And I did all that on a rookie deal. But now, I deserve to be paid as the top running back in the National Football League.”

NFL legend Emmitt Smith wanted four years, $17 million

The Dallas Cowboys offered four years and $9.1 million. There was a gap of $8 million.

Jerry Jones shared his side of the story in the docuseries, “Contract negotiations are full of ambiguity.

But I have a very high tolerance for ambiguity ‘cause I can go longer than most and not have the answer.

He wanted quarterback money, and I just didn’t have the money to pay that because we hadn’t turned the corner financially during those times.”

Charles Haley’s actions led Jerry Jones to bring back Emmitt Smith

In the 1993 season, the Cowboys struggled to win in the first few games.

Charles Haley, their defensive end back then, told Jerry Jones, “We’ve got the greatest running back in the world, and we’re sitting here playing with a rookie.”

Haley’s anger turned into rage, and he threw his helmet in the sheetrock right beside where Jones was standing.

Jones told Haley, “Charles, let’s please don’t do something that both of us can’t get over here.”
Charles Haley said in the docuseries, “The helmet almost hit Jerry, I almost got cut. But Jerry signed Emmitt the next week.”

Jerry Jones realized his team needed their running back.

They settled at 13.6 million dollars – it made Emmitt Smith the highest-paid runner in the game back then.

Micah Parsons reportedly seeks to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL

Micah Parsons is currently in the final year of his rookie contract with the Dallas Cowboys.

He signed a 4-year contract worth $17 million in June 2021. In April 2024, the Cowboys exercised a $24.007 million worth 5th-year option for the 2025 season.

According to Spotrac, Parsons is scheduled to earn a base salary of $24.007 million for the 2025 season.

But he is reportedly seeking a contract extension that would make him the highest-paid defensive (non-quarterback) player in the NFL.

Micah Parsons wants to surpass Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt

In March 2025, The Dallas Morning News reported that Micah Parsons is seeking a $200 million contract extension.

He wants to surpass the average annual salaries of Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns($40 million) and T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers($41 million).

Garrett received a massive four-year, $160 million contract extension, while T.J. Watt signed a three-year, $123 million contract extension.

DE Micah Parsons is giving subtle signs of dissatisfaction

The 26-year-old defensive end removed “Cowboys” from his social media bios (Instagram and X).
His Instagram bio reads:

Jerry Jones says agents are there to make their percentage

On August 21, Jerry Jones shared on Michael Irvin’s podcast,

“I have agreed to give more money than has ever been given in terms of guaranteed money that anyone ever has, as far as a defensive player. I’ve done that.

Now, I am the cat that writes the check. Now, Micah has got three years with the Cowboys left. He’s got three years.

At some point, somebody has to have the say over the others. At some point, it has to be that way. My job is managing the check.
Micah has got to do the playing. Where is the least important part of this equation we’re talking about? The attorney or the agent.

He works for Micah. They are in here to make their percentage. They are in here to advise Micah.

Reporter for NFL Network believes Micah Parsons and Jerry Jones will meet in the middle

On August 22, Jane Slater, Reporter for NFL Network, wrote on her X:

“I don’t have a crystal ball but here’s how I expect this to play out. Here soon Micah will talk to Jerry bc Jerry ain’t trading him.

Micah is a competitor and he ain’t sitting or interested in losing game checks. The other thing likely wearing on him?

Playing and getting hurt without security. Jerry will appreciate the “win”, so to speak, he’s been expecting it.

Jones knows he has him for 3 more years if he wants. Jones secretly respects Micah’s mettle though. A worthy opponent in his favorite game “deals”.

Alas, he will meet Micah again in the middle somehow and then make it look like they both “won” the deal.

They will laugh, shake hands and hug tight. Everyone will get what they wanted but once again we will write how much harder both sides made it than it needed to be.
