NEW DELHI: In a strategic move, the New England Patriots have secured linebacker Christian Elliss after closely monitoring his performance during their Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Elliss, previously with the Eagles, hit the market three months after their initial encounter, prompting the Patriots to swiftly claim him off waivers.

The 24-year-old linebacker, who reportedly drew interest from five other NFL teams, caught the attention of the Patriots with his on-field contributions. While Elliss played a significant role on special teams for Philadelphia this season, accumulating 238 snaps, he notably showcased his defensive capabilities during the Eagles' clash with the Patriots.

In that encounter, Elliss played 43% of defensive snaps, amounting to 34 plays, and an impressive 80% of snaps on special teams, totaling 23 plays. His versatility and impact on both fronts evidently left a lasting impression on the Patriots' coaching staff.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick expressed the team's rationale behind acquiring Elliss, emphasizing the perpetual search for linebacker depth. Belichick stated, "Depth at linebacker is something I would say you’re always looking for — every team is looking for, especially at this time of year. We had an opportunity to get it, so look forward to working with him."

Elliss' increased role at linebacker in the game preceding his release from the Eagles further highlighted his potential. He started and played a season-high 75% of defensive snaps, showcasing his versatility and adaptability on the field.

To make room for Elliss on the roster, the Patriots decided to waive Ty Montgomery, a running back, wide receiver, and kick returner. Montgomery, whose missed block led to a blocked punt in the recent victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be replaced by the promising linebacker as the Patriots strategically bolster their defensive lineup.
