New York Giants rumors: John Harbaugh contract hold up comes down to one major issue

The New York Giants’ much-anticipated move to appoint John Harbaugh as their next head coach is taking longer than expected, and the delay has sparked fresh speculation across the league. While reports suggest both sides are confident a deal will eventually be completed, one major issue continues to hold things up behind the scenes.

One point slowing down the Giants deal

According to multiple reports, the holdup is not about money or contract length. Instead, it comes down to the reporting structure within the organisation. During his long and successful tenure with the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh reported directly to team owner Steve Bisciotti. That setup gave him significant autonomy and a clear chain of command.



The Giants, however, have traditionally followed a different model. Their head coach typically works under the general manager, rather than reporting straight to ownership. At present, that general manager is Joe Schoen, who has been with the franchise through a difficult rebuilding phase.



This difference in structure appears to be the key reason negotiations are taking longer than expected. Harbaugh, known for being detail-oriented, reportedly wants clarity on who he answers to and how decisions will be made within the organisation.

Why this matters to John Harbaugh

After 18 seasons in Baltimore, Harbaugh is stepping into what could be the final chapter of his coaching career. At this stage, control and clarity are as important as salary. Having a direct line to ownership would allow him to implement his vision without confusion or internal power struggles.

For the Giants, agreeing to such a change would mark a shift from their usual way of operating. While ownership has always had the final say on coaching decisions, day-to-day football operations have generally flowed through the general manager.



Despite the delay, insiders insist the deal is still moving in the right direction. NFL insider Adam Schefter has reported that talks are ongoing and positive, even if the finish line has not yet been crossed.

There is also no indication that the Giants are reconsidering their interest in Harbaugh. In fact, many around the league believe New York is willing to be flexible given Harbaugh’s resume, which includes a Super Bowl title and consistent playoff success.

Once the reporting structure is finalised and written clearly into the contract, the remaining details are expected to fall into place quickly. The Giants are hopeful of introducing Harbaugh formally in the coming days, signalling the start of a new era for the franchise.

For now, the wait continues not because of money, but because both sides want to get the power structure right from day one.
