The Dallas Cowboys’ Monday Night Football game against the Houston Texans was a disaster, with the team suffering a 34-10 loss that was as embarrassing as it was frustrating. The loss exposed serious issues on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Cooper Rush’s poor performance and the ongoing struggles of the offensive line.
Despite stepping in for Dak Prescott earlier in the season, Rush has failed to replicate the success he had in 2020 when he replaced the injured Prescott. In both of Rush’s recent starts, the Cowboys lost by more than two scores. Against the Texans, Rush threw 55 passes, completing only 32, while also being sacked five times. The offensive line struggled mightily, failing to protect Rush and allowing constant pressure.
Shannon Sharpe Criticizes McCarthy’s Coaching Decisions
Shannon Sharpe, former NFL star and analyst, did not hold back in his analysis of the game. He took particular aim at head coach Mike McCarthy’s decision-making, especially the failure to give Trey Lance an opportunity to play.
On a segment of
Nightcap following the game, Sharpe suggested the Cowboys should abandon their current season and focus on developing young talent like Lance, who has barely seen any game action since being traded from the San Francisco 49ers. Sharpe pointed out that the Cowboys' offensive line was in disarray, and with the season already slipping away, it might be time to give Lance a shot to prove himself.
He stated, “At this point in time, Ocho, I would just play Trey Lance because what are you hoping for? Try to get the worst pick you can possibly pick. It’s time to rebuild. Your offensive line is trash. From left to right, it’s all of them.”
McCarthy’s Regret: Should He Have Played Lance?
Following the loss, McCarthy addressed the media and admitted that he regretted not giving Trey Lance some playing time during the game. McCarthy acknowledged that with the team already out of contention in the game, putting Lance in for a series could have been a valuable opportunity for the young QB.
“I think the one thing I should have done at the end [that] I didn’t do was I put Trey in there. I could have gotten him a series. That’s one thing that I was second-guessing myself on,” McCarthy said in the postgame presser.
The Cowboys’ Future: Is It Time for a Rebuild?
While McCarthy’s admission of regret is notable, the real question for the Cowboys moving forward is whether they will focus on rebuilding or continue to push for a playoff spot despite the mounting issues. With injuries piling up and key players like Jake Ferguson, Markquese Bell, and several offensive linemen sidelined, the Cowboys are in no shape to compete at a high level.
The failure to give Lance meaningful playing time could be another example of the Cowboys mismanaging a young talent. With Trey Lance’s future in question—his contract is set to expire soon, and Jerry Jones has yet to extend him—there’s a growing sense that the Cowboys may once again waste the potential of a talented player.
For now, the focus for Dallas is likely to turn to fixing the offensive line, evaluating their quarterback situation, and planning for next season.
