Stefon Diggs still sits on the free-agent market, but that may not last much longer. The former Patriots wide receiver cleared a major hurdle after a Massachusetts jury found him not guilty in his assault and strangulation case. Since then, NFL trade rumors around Diggs picked up fast, especially with contenders still looking for veteran help before training camp.
Now, two teams continue to stand out. The Washington Commanders need another proven target for
Jayden Daniels, while the Kansas City Chiefs still search for stability around
Patrick Mahomes. Both teams make real football sense for Diggs, especially after USA TODAY’s Nate Davis linked them as logical landing spots recently.
NFL Trade Rumors: Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs emerge as realistic landing spots for Stefon Diggs after legal resolution
The Washington Commanders enter the 2026 season with pressure and opportunity. Jayden Daniels showed flashes last season, but Washington still lacks depth behind Terry McLaurin. Deebo Samuel’s future also remains uncertain after a disappointing year. That leaves room for a proven veteran.
Stefon Diggs checks several boxes here. He grew up in nearby Maryland and starred at the University of Maryland before entering the NFL.
More importantly, he still produced at a high level in 2025. Even after recovering from a torn ACL suffered in 2024, Diggs posted 85 catches, 1,013 yards, and four touchdowns for the Patriots last season.
USA TODAY NFL analyst Nate Davis pointed toward Washington because of its cap space and need for another reliable receiver. The fit also works stylistically. Diggs still creates separation underneath and thrives in timing-based offenses. Daniels would benefit from that immediately.
Also, another hint came on Saturday when Diggs was back in the DMV, as his "Diggs Deep Foundation" was hosting an event for Mother's Day. Naturally, when Diggs spoke to the media, he was asked about the Commanders.
"Yeah, a little bit," Diggs said when asked if he had talked to some Washington players. "I'm familiar with the city, and I'm familiar with the people. So, we're gonna see down the pipe over these next couple of months. What looks good, what makes sense. I definitely wanna shed some light on them and might go check 'em out for a little bit. It's love. It's hometown. So, it makes sense, but right now, I kinda like to take a breath. I've been training, I've been doing everything I'm supposed to.”
Then there are the Chiefs. Kansas City already added pieces this offseason, yet questions remain around the receiver room. Patrick Mahomes dealt with inconsistency from his pass catchers throughout 2025 before his knee injury cut the season short.
That is why the Stefon Diggs trade chatter around Kansas City keeps growing even though Diggs remains a free agent. The Chiefs took chances on veterans like DeAndre Hopkins and Hollywood Brown before. Diggs would fall into that same category, except his production remains stronger than most available options.
The money could complicate things because Kansas City carries limited cap space. Still, a short-term incentive-heavy contract could solve that problem quickly.
For now, the New England Patriots move on without Stefon Diggs. But as camps approach, the Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs continue to look like two teams worth watching closely.
