Nick Bosa speaks out on 49ers' collapse as Lions take lead in NFC
The 2024 NFL season has been full of surprises for the San Francisco 49ers. After coming off a tough Super Bowl loss and a strong run to the conference title, they had big expectations. But now, with just two weeks left in the season, their playoff dreams are out of reach. As they get ready for a crucial rematch against the Detroit Lions, the 49ers are facing challenges they didn’t expect.
As the 2024 NFL season enters its final stretch, Nick Bosa and the San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a place they never anticipated. After a heart-wrenching Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs and a dominant run to the conference title, the 49ers were poised to make a strong return. Yet, with just two weeks left in the season, their hopes have been dashed.
On Monday night, the 49ers will welcome the Detroit Lions to Levi’s Stadium for a high-stakes rematch of last January’s NFC Championship game. But the script has flipped dramatically. The Lions, with an impressive 13-2 record, are on the brink of securing the top spot in the NFC, while the 49ers, now 6-9, have already seen their playoff dreams slip away.
Ahead of this crucial showdown, Sports Illustrated's Grant Cohn sat down with 49ers defensive standout Nick Bosa to discuss the team's surprising downturn and what it’s like to face the Lions once more. On Friday, Cohn probed Bosa about the team’s rocky season and the challenge that lies ahead on Monday.
“Q: You mentioned seeing where you were at last year relative to the Lions. What has it been like seeing them ascend while you guys have taken a few steps back? How do you reconcile that?
BOSA: "I don't know how to answer that. They're doing great and we had an off year."
Nick Bosa acknowledged the challenges faced by the San Francisco 49ers this season, from the string of injuries to the team's overall struggles. Yet, with a grounded perspective, he reminded fans that, despite the setbacks, he could be in a worse situation, one with less fulfillment, but a good paycheck.

The San Francisco 49ers suffered a 29-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, adding to their struggles on the road. The game was once again overshadowed by penalties, with the 49ers committing 11 fouls for a total of 90 yards. These mistakes affected all areas of the game; offense, defense, and special teams. After the game, star defensive player Nick Bosa spoke out, admitting that penalties have been the team's biggest issue this season, contributing to their tough performance so far.
"It's happened way too many times this year. When it rains it pours.. it's very frustrating all around. Offense, defense, special teams."-Nick Bosa said after the loss to the Miami Dolphins.”
Bosa’s performance this season has seen a noticeable dip, with the star defender tallying just seven sacks in 2024. This comes as a stark contrast to his explosive 2022 campaign, where he recorded a career-high 18.5 sacks, followed by another impressive 10.5 in 2023. Yet, since his lone sack in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, Bosa has been largely absent from the sack column. His struggles are compounded by missing three games and failing to register a single sack in his last two appearances.
